V70 steering rack options

Post by Scoobymad555 »

Hey guys :D

I'm after some help with my UK 2000 mk1 v70 (2.4 n/a auto) - steering rack is shot and don't have the money atm to consider refurbished so hunting for a cheap second hand unit.

Part code on my rack is p9461262 (think it's SMI unit and was possibly used on 850's too?) - obviously matching code will fit but can anyone confirm any others that will fit even if they need light modification to do so?

Options seem to be slim within my budget at the moment and I don't want to end up doing £100 down something I can't make work/fit really!

TIA :)

SMI and TRW racks are fully interchangeable (in assembly with tie rods). Tie rod ends are the same. No difference whether it S(V)70 or 850 of any year.
If my English is bad, please correct me

From what I've read, the only differences between SMI and TRW are the inner tie rods and construction (SMI is steel and alloy, TRW is all alloy) so what Azik has written would make sense. Several old threads on vpcuk, volvoforums.org.uk and T5D5 suggest that all fittings and mountings are the same.

Since we are on the topic. I have a question are the FWD 98-2004 v/s/c/70 are interchangeable? If, not what are the differences? I know SMI and TRW.

See upthread, 95-00 (P80 platform) are all interchangeable. Probably 93 and 94 too but those are oddball years for the 850, would want to make sure.

01-onward (P2 platform) the V70 are completely different cars, will not swap back to P80 cars. There is a separate forum here for P2 cars to reflect that fact.

C70 from 01-04 is another matter, this is another car I never pay much attention to but it is possible the later racks are compatible with the P80 cars. Check out replacement racks for the C70 at FCPEuro you'll have you answer in a jiffy!

All p80 racks will interchange but the INNER tie-rods MUST be assembled to the correct racks SMI to SMI TRW to TRW. OUTER tie-rod ends are the same.

I’m seeinng confusing info on the Web about the original installed rack

Some sites refer to 11th digit of VIN bring 1 or 2

There is definitive info that the fifth row on the option plate ( inside of driver fender in NA) aid 4 or 5 for TRW or SMI racks

I doubt there are two codes for this

That's a new one to me. Never heard anything other than the lower 6/7? number on the Vin plate is where the ID for the rack installed when new is.
However, the rider is that at the age the cars are now that may no longer be an accurate guide. A visual is best these days unless you know the cars full history.
