I don't know if I want a Jaguar, but when I see cars like this XJ coupe, I start to think. If anything is worth the trouble, it's gotta be this.

One of my all time favorites is the early XJ6.
The hips, the stance, the face, that engine, the leather & wood, the way it looks like it's ready to pounce.
Having them start regularly is another issue. In Seattle long ago a guy pulled into the driveway next to my apt to turn around. Beautiful early XJ6 with the tiny bumpers...but it didn't sound right....his window was open....I grinned and said, That's no Jag. He smiled sheepishly and said "Ford." He had had it swapped for a 302 and drove it every day.

A couple decades ago, many Jaguars were converted to small Chevrolet V8s. Yes, they were bastards, but they would start, run and did not need buckets of money to keep going.

Man. Nobody ever made a sedan that looks like a Jag, all the way to the X308. I'm sure they're flawed, but you really get something unique in return.

Listed it. This car got me through my twenties but it's time. The previous owner has first dibs. I'd love for it to go to an MVS member if he declines.

I've never been a Jaaaaaaag guy, I gotta admit the only ones I really like are the F-type and most of the XKs. What I love about the E30 is that it's a true driver's car. Jags aren't as much driver's cars in the sense that they're tossable, fun cars... they're meant to pamper you. That's why I don't own a 7 series or an S class... I'm not a luxury car guy. I like a car I can push to its limits.

Allow me to preface this opinion with the following: Given the vastly different types of road and road surfaces present in our two countries, the assessment of how a vehicle handles and drives may be very different.
An E30 is a long, long way from a driver's car - excluding the M3. The suspension geometry was compromised, to the extent the rear trailing arm left the rear of the car unstable and skittish. If unloaded during cornering, either by undulations in the road or driver error they have a tendency to snap oversteer. However, if you load them in the corner, again either through undulations or through trying to accelerate through the corner you can induce positive rear camber...which you really don't want in any sort of fast corner. As for the front, there's nothing wrong with a single MacPherson setup in general, but the factory setup from BM left a lot to be desired on turn in. They don't inspire confidence on turn in at all and do suffer from bump steer quite badly. The Touring, which is bizarrely less desirable, solved some of these issues by having more weight over the rear and slightly stiffer rear springs as a result. This eliminated some of the issues associated with experiencing camber changes mid-corner.
Of course, almost all these negative characteristics can be tuned out of the car with some alignment work and choice componentry upgrades, but out of the box, on UK roads, they're rather poor. Which is reflected in the market and why they're priced relatively cheaply here.
The E36 is the 90s BM of choice if you want a drivers car. That the E30 was still being sold three years into the E36s life is positively baffling when it was so far behind it in terms of chassis development.

I'd love a Jaguar XJ, my wallet would not
Replaced the fuel pump in my V70 yesterday, quite an easy job. I had to dremel the pump carrier a bit to fit the AEM 340L/h pump but otherwise no issues

E36s are great cars to drive, my buddy has one that needs a bit of work, but it still feels great compared to most other cars I've driven. It's actually very similar to the E90, and it's no wonder why people compare the two and claim them to be the best 3 series as far as driving experience.Cookeh wrote: ↑13 Dec 2020, 04:50 Allow me to preface this opinion with the following: Given the vastly different types of road and road surfaces present in our two countries, the assessment of how a vehicle handles and drives may be very different.

I've wanted an E30 for a while, I just love how they look and their potential. I look at them like any other car; a good starting point. The aftermarket for suspension is HUGE, and I would of course be going all out in that aspect. I really just want a light, fun car that I can take out to western NC to enjoy the mountain roads. Nothing I have right now is really up to that task. My V70R COULD be, but it's a big car... I love it, but I want something more similar to a Miata yet with space for me to fit in it!
I considered an E36 too, but I think the E30 is just better for what I want. They look good, they're light, and the M20 engines are fantastic when worked up. One of my Miata parts guys has a boosted M20 E30 and the thing is absolutely wild... that's what sold me on them, as if I needed any more convincing.
