broken thermostat housing - 98 s70 glt

Post by dkbmx »

Hello,

I just recently realized that my thermostat housing seems to be broken. The bolt that usually holds on the thermostat cover is gone, and so is some of the cover itself. Any ideas of probable causes, or anything else I should replace along with it? And how does the angle of the cover make a difference? Thanks.

The last ass monkey that pretended to know what he was doing most certainly broke the casting when he tried to remove it or over torqued the torx head bolt that is supposed to be there. Buy a new casting and the correct torx head bolts ( might be T-30) and replace the thermostat while your at it.

I finally went to the local junkyard and got one. Before installing it, I noticed that it is not just the top that is cracked, the bottom is too. The top looks pretty easy to replace, but how bad is it to replace the bottom. Am I going to need to take out a bunch of stuff to get to it? Any tips or recommendations are greatly appreciated! Thanks for the help so far.

Never changed the bottom, but my advise is to be extremely careful. I have read some horror stories about this. You don't want to bugger up anything in the process...the base is attached directly to the engine block. Use plenty of PB Blaster, allowing it to soak numerous times. Most likely the bolts are seared to the block and will be very difficult to get out. You might even have to heat things up to get the base loose (and that's dangerous as gas lines are so close). If you're not confident, you might consider getting the parts and allowing someone else to do this work. That said, taking an old one off of a junk yard car will give you some idea as to what's involved. If that goes well (I would try to do it without damaging the donor car and seeing how that goes), you would probably have the confidence to do the r&r with your own car.
