V70 Over Advance on Intak/Exhaust

Post by MikelB49 »

I Replaced cam seals on my 2004 V70 wagon and did a belt, tensioner and installed a new CVVT hub on the intake cam.

The problem I'm having is that it throughs codes for both cams but I can rest while running and it runs OK but on startup the codes will come back after a few miles of driving. It also will hunt (RPM) on start up when cold but not when warm, which I thought might be the tensioner being out of adjustment but it still codes when warm but doesn't hunt.

I've followed the procedure that was posted on here and it seems right. The thing I did find was that I probed the number one cylinder with a dial indicator installed and with the piston at TDC and what I found was that the crank position is several teeth past its TDC mark when the piston is at TDC.

I'm not sure about crank phasing on these cars but one tooth is 7.5 degrees and the ECU I believe controls about a 5 degree change.

I bought this car used with 160K and I just retired my 95 850 wagon with 397k and still running. I understand progress but this CVVT system sure muddied a normal timing belt change.

So,any ideas/experience/solutions

Thanks, Michael

Align it again. Rely on the crankshaft pulley marks (on two teeth): the pulley has a notch and can't be installed incorrectly, so it is always right.

ECM can compensate variable timing for up to 4 degrees of camshaft sprocket misalignment. The engine can tolerate mechanically up to 8 degrees, after that it's up to cylinder head rebuild.

What you have discovered is that the crank mark is NOT TDC, correct.

It’s a timing non-interference mark, not a TDC MARK

Here’s a link to cam flank angle and how much play you have on a VVT CAR
