1998 S70 replacement front rotors/pads help
Wow. I'd not realized buying replacement rotors and brake pads for my 1998 S70 (is turbo - are all of this model the same? Still don't understand what designates a "GLT" either. I'm not a complete pinhead - I AM a female - and am taking over maintenance/repair for my car from my father, who turned 70 several weeks back (at any rate I am making a valiant attempt to do so!). I shouldn't have thought it would be so terribly confusing and difficult to purchase the correct items, but the more I read on the subject, the more I fear I will purchase items with incorrect fitment and/or improper or absurd usage (brake pads/rotors suitable solely for track - not street driving? I drive an old school Volvo sedan - not a fricking Ferrari- how is this even an issue?). I was still trying to wrap my puny mind around this "drilled and/or slotted" (if I remember correctly) rotor business, and not 10 minutes later was confronted with different rotor SIZE thread. As long as I purchase items that fit my car, how important are these other factors/choices? (aside from quality- I generally try to always buy OEM parts or brands I am familiar with - I have a 1968 Honda CT90 with a 1980 ATC110 engine - my father hates me riding a bike so I have logged oh so very many hours online, hunting for parts - so I was under the impression finding suitable Volvo rotors/pads would be simple and easy compared to 53 year old Honda bike parts. But not so much. Is now 2:34 a.m. and I am bleary eyed and frustrated. Any assistance anyone is willing to give me would be very much appreciated - thanks! (A few months ago by myself I diagnosed my Volvo as having a cracked heater core - purchased a replacement - and assisted my dad in swapping them out - after convincing him my assessment of the problem was correct- so despite my lack of experience and/or knowledge of mechanics I'm not a complete bimbo)

Welcome Cora! Yes, the options are a bit dizzying in scope, and car people aren’t afraid to share their opinions on what’s best, sometimes to a fault. We use FCP in CZt fir parts for our fleet as they are one day shipping, IPD isa bit closer to you. The other upside of FCP is lifetime warranty on parts via replacement, so you pay for parts once on a given Car.
Leave the cross drilled and grooved rotors for the young men trying to compensate.
ATE, Bosch, Zimmerman or OEM Volvo rotors for the front...links , these run $40-50 each
Part 31262095 for the 280 mm rotors or “ discs” on your GLT
https://www.fcpeuro.com/Volvo-parts/V70 ... d=797&v=83
For pads, I’ve been happy with Akebono pads in our fleet of 8 lady drivers from 18-93 years old
... links
Choices here for part 31341243
Bosch ATE Jurid Tecnar Volvo running $40-60 for set
https://www.fcpeuro.com/Volvo-parts/V70 ... d=797&v=83
When you order the Volvo parts you usually get some extras in the box like new springs and caliper bolts that are good to replace on a brake job.
Dad may have come from the era where we used to turn brake rotors, or scrape them flat on a lathe , but that is rarely done any more, they just get replaced. Old rotors make nice planters, hats, or gongs with hammers.
The authorities frown upon you rolling them down hills into busy streets and YouTubing the resulting chaos, however.

GLT is a trim level in the UK/Europe. In the US it refers to the low pressure turbo versions of the 850s & C/S/V70s.
Pads/rotors designed for the track can indeed be used 'on the road', but they're designed to operate at ppeak efficiency at much higher temperatures than you will feasibily maintain during normal driving conditions. Pads will also be a different compound, to give sharper bite and better pedal feel but they will generally squeal. You do not need these for normal driving, avoid.
Drilled rotors have holes drilled through the rotor face in order to aid in cooling and heat dissipation. They do however suffer from cracking issues, and is perhaps the worst option one can get for upgraded brake rotors. For normal driving, avoid.
Slotted rotors are again a performance braking upgrade, and feature slots being cut into the face of the rotor. This allows for better heat and gas dissipation, and also cleans the pads during braking. This ensures you always have a clean braking surface with no glazing on the pad, and maintain lower rotor temperatures. There are different designs of slots, but they're largely much of a muchness from a performance point of view. C-hook, grooved, G-hook, slotted are all types of 'slotted'. If you do some spirited driving in this Volvo in hilly areas then slotted rotors may help reduce brake fade. If you don't experience brake fade normally, avoid.
There are two front rotor sizes for C/S/V70 cars, 280mm and 302mm. 302mm was only seen on 'R'-badged models, and later 'Turbo' badged models (99-2004 onwards in the UK, not sure about the US). If it is your Fathers car then you should have access to its history, and hence you will know if it has been upgraded to the 302mm size. If this upgrade has not been installed, then you need 280mm front brakes. The other solution is to simply measure your front rotors.
It is most likely that you have 280mm front, 295mm rear brakes, and as such I would suggest this: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 1341243kt3
Ultimately, any known brand will be fine. Pagid, Textar, Bosch, Zimmerman, ATE, for example.

Here is a link to when I replaced calipers on my 1999 V70. Same brake parts. You are just replacing the pads, but it is a good idea to renew brake fluid every 2 years even in dry arid SoCal. If the bleeder screws look at all old, order up two new ones and replace them and their little rubber hats, part numbers links

Just a correction. "GLT" was only an LPT version in the US for the 850's in '97. It was a trim level for the '93-'96 models.
These guys have you covered with recommendations, but I will add that when we installed Tektar pads on the wife's '97 GLT, I was very unhappy with the amount of dust they produced. I swapped them out for a set of the Bosch pads, and have been happy with them since.

One more plug for the Volvo OEM set.
The Textars are known for a bit more dust, but the Volvos are also known to be quieter - thats probably because they are actually labelled RIGHT AND LEFT and are chamfered to prevent the squeaking and squealing, unlike most of the other brands.
I confess, I learned this today.

There are many other quality videos on Youtube. Give FCP a call and they will gladly guide you to purchase the correct parts. By the way, no one should and you shouldn't either consider a female newbie a bimbo.
