Removing Radiator Splash Guard on 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo

Post by boisevolvo850 »

O.K. Here's my problem: I am trying to remove the splash guard on my 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon. I searched the web, and most instructions say there are two 10mm bolts that hold the splash guard in place, and you remove them to get at the plastic nut that opens the valve to drain the radiator. Trouble is, I spent an hour under my radiator, and I can't find any 10mm bolts holding the splash guard in place. I did see two cheesey looking tabs that seem to hold the bottom of the splash guard in place. i tried bending one, and it bent easily, but I'm afraid it will break if I pry too much with the flat headed screwdriver I'm using. I searched the web, and I found one reference on this site, where a guy said a high curb had broken a tab off of the splash guard on the bottom of the radiator. Now I'm wondering if some of these 850's (maybe the turbo models) have tabs holding the splash guard in place? I don't want to bend these tabs and maybe break them if it won't help remove the radiator splash guard. So, am I stupid here, or do some of these splash guards have tabs instead of bolts holding them in place?

The two 10mm bolts are on the sides.

Yep, one 10mm bolt on each side.

In this pic, you can see a hole in the air guide (splash guard) mounting tab, toward the top right corner of the pic. That's on one side, same on the other: Image

As the guys have said, pull the 2 x10mm bolts from opposite ends. Then as you suspected there is a small lip on the back of the air guide/splash guard piece at the middle at the back. It slots into a small slot in the bottom of the radiator. Push back at the middle rear of the guard toward the front of the car and it should bend and release. Let the guard drop down and then it can be pulled back and down to release it from the 4-5 clips at the front of it.

It would be cheaper and stronger to use some good zipties. Overtime, the holes can widen causing the screws to slip out. Had it happen to me on the road and i nearly drove my friend off the road when a black skidplate came flying out from under the car. Now i have a bout 8 zip ties holding that sucker on from various holes. Funnily enough, the screw holes have become too wide to use the original screws.
