My unexpected Christmas gift was my accessory/serpentine belt shredded on Christmas Eve. Wondering if anybody has changed this with the alternator in the car. I've got the spline tool for the pulley but can't find a short enough counterhold.
Couple of questions:
1. has anybody done it with the alternator in the car? did you have to move the a/c line?
2. is the counterhold Torx T50 or M10? EDIT: Confirmed it's M10 (which T50 will fit).
3. what's the correct length for the counterhold? I figure 3" (75mm) max. The ones I have are longer.

I think to remember someone tried it and said it was too hard given the pulley can be really stuck
Pulling the alternator is not that hard. Keep in mind the regulator may not be that fresh either

I would rather try looking for a recently replaced alternator if there's a nearby Kennyupull, should be around $60 however it must match the regulator number

I had to remove my alternator to replace the pulley...the pulley was seized on the shaft and that's what caused the serpentine belt failure. I eventually had to cut the pulley off of the shaft. There was no way it was coming off in the engine bay. Not enough room.
It's not that hard to remove the alternator...just takes patience and a little time.
You are wise to just replace the pulley and not the entire alternator (ie. you are saving yourself some big $).
Good luck.

The answer to my own question is that, yes, it can be done in the car. Or, more precisely, I was able to do do it with the help of a short triple square 12 point bit. I got this: http://www.metalnerd.com/catalog/produc ... ffaf235a78 and the bit is 2 1/4" or 55mm in length. It was still a bit fiddly getting it on and it took quite a bit of torque to undo the pulley but is definitely doable.
