Sears?
Sears?
I know that's cheap, but.......well here's my last experience at Sears. My wife hit a pothole at the mall and blew out the right front tire. We originally bought the tires at the Sears, so I put the donut on and took it over. When I picked the car up, I quickly found a bad vibration. I stopped and found two of the lugs only finger tight and it looked as though the wheel was cocked. Turns out that the "mechanic" had mounted the wheel so that the little stud which retains the rotor was not lined up with the hole in the rim. I know this sounds impossible, but believe it. The "mechanic" could not see that the wheel was sitting lopsided as he torqued down the three lug nuts that he did bother to tighten. He certainly didn't give it a spin when he was done! He torqued the wheel tight enough to bend the stud completely over, gouging the back side of the rim. The service manager said that they would replace the stud, but that I would have to go to the dealer and get it. So he breaks off the remainder of the stud, puts the wheel on with four lugs and I drove over to the dealer to get the replacement along with a new lug to replace the one they stripped in the whole process. Sears reimbursed me for the dealer parts and even the tire, but certainly not for my wasted time. The service manager acted as though these things just happen. When I got home I found the donut just thrown in the trunk, not put back where it belongs. Should have figured. I wonder how many others have had similar experieinces with Sears Auto? Sorry to rant, but will I be gong back to Sears??

Thanks for the warning wwilme. How did it turn out... does the wheel act ok now?
If anyone ever wants to check the torque on their 850's wheel lugs after a shop works on it, they should be 81 lbs./ft. Sorry, don't know how many newton-meters that is.
It's a good thing to check, because if some are tighter/looser, it can warp the wheel's rotor.

I have various "bad" experiances with shops. Some by shops that were owned by friends - they had a tech that had a off day or was early in their learning curve (or didn't give a $#!t).
Always inspect work performed by a repair shop or service center.

Luckilly no damage to the rim (as far as I know.) I made them put it on the balance machine (that big thing with a hood that spins the wheel) while I personally inspected the wheel to see if it was out of round or warped. Three "mechanics" stood around while I directed the show in their own shop. I think the service manager was just hopng to get me out of there quickly before I figured out something else they had screwed up.
It's a shame that the customer needs to know more about car repairs than the guys doing the work. I feel for the innocents out there who get taken everytime they get their cars worked on. My mother or sister could easily have been told that the blown tire had ruined her whole suspension, but that they'd have it back together in a jiffy, for a small fee! I'm sure that many folks have been charged by shops repairing their own mistakes.
And then there's those tune up and lube places. I once put a new air filter in my F-150 right before I got an oil change. The mechanic came into the waiting area an informed me that I neeeded a new airfilter, but that it was only $18.95! The manager just shrugged it off and said that most airfilters are dirty.
What are you going to do?

A former employee of Sears told me stories about cars being sent out without any brake pads at all cuz the guys got a leetle too stoned. Apparently fairly common state for their employees cuz they hire from the bottom of the barrel. Better mechs work at better shops who pay more.
And then there are the numerous criminal complaints in multiple states on multiple occasions targeting Sears and their business practices.
I wouldn't let a Sears employee in my car, let alone work on it.
