It can get pricey, but you have to consider the market value of what you're buying. If I were to buy, say, a newer Hyundai Sonata with minor front end damage for $2000 after fees, I'm still ahead of the game. Fix it, sell for maybe $7k. With cheaper, older cars like these, it can certainly become very cost prohibitive.
Dirk is thinking...,

$500...??? That’s four stick shift Volvo’s....

$7000 is too many to count.

Yup, the internet bid fee is tacked onto every purchase. Basically the breakdown on this car is as follows...

Winning bid- $450
Buyer fee- $160
Virtual bid fee- $39
Gate fee- $59

Total- $708

The preliminary bid fee I believe is if there are no bids on the car during the live auction, you your preliminary bid wins. Every car starts the bidding at whatever the preliminary bid was at the time of the auction.
As of now, I don't think you can bid in person at Copart due to covid. I've always bid online, I won this one bidding on the app on my iPad. They have kiosks at the China Grove, NC location, but not at Concord that I've seen (where I picked up this car). The Concord location is unique in that it's literally the old Concord Speedway (not to be confused with Charlotte Motor Speedway which is still very active, also in Concord). The cars are stored inside the oval (see the auction pics for listings at that location) and the office is just outside the track. We have a lot of retired race tracks down here, no surprise. It's sad to see it go, but I'm glad it went to use as something I can actually use, and it wasn't just torn down!
This location has only been opened a year or two, so it's pretty new still. They make use of the property pretty well!

Aside from the fact you know the car, it also helps you live nearby and picked it up yourself. I'm still baffled as to why some of these auction houses won't let me bid. The fees at the place in DC that handles all the charity auctions there - plus their other two outposts - aren't quite as nasty, and you don't have to join a Club. I think the '97 850T5 was just over $500, and I talked a friend into picking it up. That was a couple years ago, when I had Funny Money and felt frisky enough to roll the dice. Drove it on some errands today, we've had a couple days of freezing rain here, and yes, ABS works. Didn't have the heart to try traction control.
