Fuel filter

Post by gmched »

I was told that Volvo xc60, 2010, 3.0. T6 for the US market has no fuel filter. Is it true?

You question is a bit philosophical.

The short answer is - yes that sounds correct (an easily serviceable fuel filter is likely not fitted to your SUV)

The long answer is a bit more complicated.

In recent years car companies (including Volvo) have been using an in tank fuel pump with an integrated filter. As far as Volvo is concerned the filter and pump should be changed at the same time.

Looking at the parts diagram it does look like the filter is replaceable but its inside the fuel tank and replacing it will not be trivial.

Let us know if you do replace yours.

Note: why do you want to replace it?

Thanks for the reply. Fuel consumption on my car recently increased and I thought replacing filter should have helped (usually this is one of the reasons of fuel consumption increase). When I took the car to the service center they said that US models have no filter and European models do. But it sounded a little odd that a car has no fuel filter so I decided to double check. Replacing the whole pumping system for this purpose makes no sense. Not sure why volvo made such an odd desision.

I wouldn't suspect the fuel filter for an increase in consumption.

The fuel system on your 3.0T is return-less and the pump runs only as long as needed to maintain the pressure.

If the filter is blocked then the pump won't be able to keep up and the fuel pressure sending unit will set a code.

Its possible that cold weather is the cause for increased consumption.

Assuming that cold is not the root cause I would change the following

1. Thermostat - the plastic housing fails around 10 years and it can fail so that coolant flows to the radiator all the time (this will increase consumption)

2. Spark Plugs - I change mine on the severe duty interval 50,000 mile (and I don't have the turbo 6 cylinder)

3. MAF - remove it and clean it

4. Throttle body - remove it and clean it

For my S80 3.2 with the same thermostat as your 3.0T it was broken when I bought it (8 years and 125,000 miles)

For my LR2 3.2 with the same thermostat as your 3.0T it was still working at 10 years but it broke shortly after removing it. (it likely would have failed on the engine if I didn't replace it when I did)

Good luck

Paul

The intake manifold is different for the 3.0T and 3.2

But the Thermostat is the same.

This link may help

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic32245.html

And in case you are wondering you can use the Volvo Thermostat (31355151) or the Land Rover Thermostat (LR006071)

Please post pictures of your Thermostat, I would really like to know if it is broken.

Good luck

Paul

Had the thermostat tested and it seems to work fine. Do you know what is a normal reading for MAF at idle? My car showed 2.5 grams per second.

Differ between engines ofc but my experience is around 5g/s for a typical volvo. I wouldn't say you're value is too low.

I agree with Kallekula

This is for the 3.2 but the 3.0T should be very similar

Good luck

Paul

PS How did you determine that your Thermostat is working properly? I had no symptoms on my 2010 S80 but it was broken when I took it off (preventative maintenance)

What is the Long Term Fuel Trim

Mine are under 3%

If your MAF is reading low then the fuel trim at idle should be high to compensate
