Eggcrates suit the 242/244 Turbo (but only in saloon guise) and the 7/9XXs. I don't personally like them on any of the P80s.
I just got a new job, but it comes with a tough decision. I will be doing over 600mi a week commuting. Now I know that's nothing to most yanks, but it will cost me around $10000 per year in fuel, and likely an additional thousand or so in parts/servicing. My T5 is already north of 200k mi, so I'm not sure if it makes sense to put that kind of mileage and money into her at this point, so I will not be commuting in it.
There is always an argument to be made about keeping it as a second car, and whilst they do drive far better than one would expect - especially with a few choice chassis mods - I don't know if its the best option for a weekend/project car. My task for you lot is to help convince me that keeping it is a sensible option.
What did you do to your Volvo today? Topic is solved

That looks pretty good on that color, I must say!
Agreed on the P80 not being the ideal chassis for a weekend/project car, however it may not be the worst car as a commuter. They are pretty cheap on maintenance too. As far as mileage, look at Abscate's T5... he's nearing 300k on that car and fixing the burned valve, and still commuting in it up until this issue.Cookeh wrote: ↑19 Feb 2021, 08:26 Eggcrates suit the 242/244 Turbo (but only in saloon guise) and the 7/9XXs. Replaced front struts and rear shocks ( Koni Actives ) as well as the anti-sway bar end links ( Ipd HD ). The originals that I removed would do the push/pull on the piston and would just stay wherever you stopped. Dead. Bury them and them bury the shovel dead.
I'm waiting on the replacement strut top spring seats and bearings, but they have been held up in shipping due to the weather/ power issues. So I had to reuse the old parts until the new ones arrive because I have to get back to work. I did notice some cracking around the bushing where it's bonded to the rubber on the spring top seat but I'm hoping it will be okay till this weekend.

For me as long as the average monthly cost of maintenance and fuel is less than a monthly car payment + fuel, then I've won. I hate car payments and I will never buy a new car again. Plus I love driving the 850. Im at 210,000mi and I hope to just keep driving her forever.

With new your paying for the privilege of having more and newer toys then the other guy, not the car. If that does not matter to you, new is just pissing money away. Same pissing contest as having a green lawn vs using the space to grow food.

On new vehicles, several years ago I came to understand the way most people see new vehicles. They wear the vehicles like clothes to be seen in as they drive around.RickHaleParker wrote: ↑20 Feb 2021, 06:45With new your paying for the privilege of having more and newer toys then the other guy, not the car. I have never understood the idea to fertilize and water lawns so they grow faster and then you need to mow more often.

Same idea as a new car... it looks nice. Doesn't serve much of a purpose, but it looks nice. I prefer to spend money elsewhere!volvolugnut wrote: ↑20 Feb 2021, 08:30 On new vehicles, several years ago I came to understand the way most people see new vehicles. Our fleets reflect our thinking - more toys and less shiny.bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑20 Feb 2021, 08:32Same idea as a new car... it looks nice. Doesn't serve much of a purpose, but it looks nice. I look at cars much the same way I look at shoes. I wouldn't want just one nice pair to handle all my needs. Work boots, hiking boots, knock around, dress. So with that goes work truck, SUV, project, and Volvo. All probably accomplished for less than 6 months of new car payments.

Wow, that's a lot of miles. Something like 60 one way? This yank walks one mile or works at home - a bit spoiled here.
Understand the need for a decision, but I'd hate to get rid of the car you like and have improved to be the way you want it.
