I had a Mercedes 240D diesel with 4 speed manual for a while. It was fun to drive around town, but I never really drove it long distance on the highway. It got maybe 40 MPG. I also had a gasoline Honda Civic with 5 speed manual that got about 40 MPG. Neither were fast, but rather fun to churn the gears.

The old Mercedes diesel engine are a favorite with the DIY Biodiesel crowd. They are pretty tolerant of variations in fuel quality.

I've wanted a 300D for a long time, I love those cars. The OM617 is a great engine, and the sound of a 5 cylinder diesel is awesome.

Half of my fleet are old Mercedes and half of them are diesel. They are very interesting designs. Only the 2001 E320 is running now. If you ever get an old Mercedes, check out MecedesSource.com. They are the MVS equivalent for Mercedes.

I really want to find one once I wrap up some of the several projects I have currently. I almost traded my 740 turbo for a W123 300d a few years ago, but it wasn't really going to make me any money since I wanted to play with it for a while lol. Had a hood stack and a bunch of other stuff... ratty car, but it sounded amazing and the interior was mint!
Crazy enough, I believe this exact car was picked up by a guy about 10 minutes down the road from me. The car was located around Atlanta.

Friend had older generation Diesel Merc but the block got crack and leaked the oil on the trip. It had lot of kilometers on dash though.

Today i melted my Volvo door handles from the ice as i had only one door left which did open. Need configure my heating timing better.

I noticed that i can apply on Fenix 5.2 ECU commands via switch example to command it go similar mode as LH3.2 etc ECUs does "DTM 3" or lamer terms it starts testing fan speeds, injectors, IAC valve etc.. Neat.

Of course the commuter would then take 6 months or so to pay for itself, and I'd have a new-to-me car that would require stage-zeroing. I'm currently eyeing up C30s so I'm not straying too far from home! Sadly to get 60mpg I'll need the garbage 1.6 PSA engine, but hey ho.
Yeah, what about a diesel Golf or Polo? Are they plentiful and reliable? Don't some of them get into the 50+ mpg range? Some wheels and springs can sport them up at bit.

He is in Wales where the annualized average price for petrol 121 pence per liter.
That works out to: 458.34 pence per gallon [US] = $6.41 per gallon [US].

We pay a comparable amount for fuel in the US but a large percentage of the cost is hidden in subsidies, tax breaks and maintaining security along the longest oil supply lines.

Do you think people here would finally quit driving huge pickups at $6.41? My sense is that even then, there is some in-your-face stubbornness involved.
