I have some questions and may need help fixing this issue. Perhaps this thread can help someone else in the future.
My 09 6cyl XC90 has the wonderful anti-skid message and light illuminated. YAY.
I would love to fix this myself, and after reading quite a lot I see that it is probably at least one of three issues:
1. The yaw rate sensor (YRS) or cables/plug has corrosion and failure due to water accumulation under the front passenger seat.
2. The steering angle sensor (SAS) has failed
3. The angle gear sleeve has stripped out
I have begun the process of diagnosing by accessing the YRS underneath the amplifier underneath the passenger seat. This was fairly easy with 10mm socket for the amp plate. The YRS sensor had two bolts, one being harder to access but not impossible. Also, the metal clip had to be bent to pull it out.
After disconnecting I looked all inside of the cubby and saw no signs of previous water resting and no wetness. The YRS and its cables are clean with no signs of corrosion... Before replacing this part I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to test the YRS to see if it has actually failed.
I'll post more info as I go along.
Thanks!!!
Anti Skid Service Light - Diagnosing and Repair
Hi...
I bought my 2003 XC90 T6 a year ago with the Anti Skid Service light on...
First I tried to clean all the wheel sensors with no result.
Went under the amplifier located under the front passenger chair to take a'look at the
YAW rate sensor. Many has been writing about water where the sensor is located.
The space where the sensor is located in my car... was dry and thye sensor itself
looked like new. No corrosion whatever. Unplugged it and plugged it back.
Connections where in perfect shape.
Hmmm. Went to a Pick a Part yard and took a sensor from a XC90.
Looked clean so I replaced it... The message came on as usual and went away.
Somewhere I have a note written down on the part numbers on the sensor.
The one that was mounted from the factory and the new one.
Volvo switched the sensor probably it was bad.
Looks the same but with different part numbers.
Write down yours on both sides of the sensor and get back to me.

First you should really get the DTCs (DiagnosticTroubleCode) read, either at a dealer or you find someone with VIDA and a DICE/VCX or get one yourself. Especially with this message it is nearly impossible to find the errors without using a readout tool, sorry.
There are simply too many possibilities. The front reluctor rings, the sensors for these, the rear wheel bearing (as the reluctor ring is built in there), the sensors for these, a cable between any sensor and the CEM, the CEM itself, the angle sensor, the yaw sensor and so on.... Problem is, you need a tool anyway, at least to delete the errors, or depending on what is really broken, the calibration procedure for the new/old yaw sensor, the calibration of the angle sensor... You see where I'm getting with this.
The only way to work through this specififc message is to pinpoint what exactly is wrong. The yaw sensor for example needs recalibration after changing it. It will work without calibration, but that takes some time for the sensor to get ready...
I'd strongly suggest you get a reader, they are around USD 100 to USD 150, I'm quite sure here on this very forum are users that sell these. My recommendation would be a VCX Nano with Bluetooth.
If you can't find someone here, move over to Swedespeed or the UK Volvo forum. VIDA as software is downloadable from the net, I'd try the version from Swedespeed by RoxanaSchram, but there you'll have to pay a small download fee (usd 3 or USD 5 it was I think) but you get a working version. If you buy a reader, there should be a version of VIDA included, if not, look for another seller.
After that get the codes read and come back with the list. Aftrewards it will be much easier to say what is wrong. And it will save you money, angle sensor and/opr yaw sensor aren't cheap, even if bought used...

Thanks very much... I have an odb2 reader but have always been confused about going further than that. I can certainly get a sensor... you say there are members that sell this sensor and also a software change? If I buy a VIDA somewhere else would I need to get Volvo XC90 specific software from someone here?
Thanks!
Edit: After looking around was I mistakenly thinking the tool you were talking about was different than an ODB2 reader? I have one of those but it was a cheap one and it shows no codes related to this issue. I would definitely like a nicer one especially if it will help with this issue. I see the one you suggested for less than $100.
Thanks!

I see you live in Florida... As a Motorsports photographer who lives in Stockholm/Sweden... Ive been to several NASCAR races in the US. And I know there is several You Pick any part yourself for coffee money. So armed with 10 m.m. tools... get a new sensor. Well worth it. It does depend on what partnumber it has. A early part can ofcourse work... but look for the newer one if there is more than one car on the lot. Im now retired and just loves to explore those U-Pull It places.
Been working with all kind of cars for more than 50 years... Also worked as a technical inspector for the JT-9 Jet engines = to those 4 on a 747. If you change the sensor... first you will have the message back for some seconds... then it dissapears.
One of my favourite U-Pull places, is located nearby the Seminole Hard Rock Cafe.
By the way for all those self mechanics who needs to take a look at the mentioned sensor... Some writes you should loosen some bolts for the passenger seat rails for easier access. No need at all. Push the seat back and you got enought space to remove the amp. I got size 13/14 in gloves... No problemo...

I got the new (used) sensor in and installed it. Drove ~25 miles and the warning has not gone off. I'm guessing the sensor was fine.OnTrack wrote: ↑21 Feb 2021, 03:48 Somewhere I have a note written down on the part numbers on the sensor.

Here are pics of the old and new sensors. The numbers on the other side of each (the plug side) are -
Old: 30795302
New: scratched but I believe it is 31110063

I have a VCX Nano that says it is "for Volvo" in shipment - so I'm assuming the software is pre-programmed(?). Couldn't find a bluetooth version though. Bought the yaw rate sensor before your comment though so I think I have eliminated that as the culprit since it doesn't seem to have made any difference.paddy0174 wrote: ↑21 Feb 2021, 14:15

Ill look at the Swedespeed software - that is to put on my laptop correct?

I'm happy to spend a few for the software..... the only download I can locate online is the 2012 version. How might I purchase from RoxanaSchram? They have direct messaging turned off of their profile and I can not find a thread with any link to purchase or contact.
I'm kind of at a standstill until I can figure out a way to get the software. I guess I may install this 2012D

If you searched forum, you will see that most people would leave this alone, for a reason (not worth fixing it, sometimes spending thousands of dollars, only to be back at square one)...
