04 s60 lifters

Post by stephansvolvo »

So I had to pull the head off to repair a head gasket. Took the head to get it RRd the guys asked if I had the lifters in the right order. This was news to me as the other two heads I’ve done were 98 and didn’t seem to need a spec order putting them back together.
My question is am I going to have issues with this head?
The shop is going to take the time to put them back in order, hopefully, and do the whole build and etc with cams in.

I guess I made a beginners mistake. 😂
Thanks for your help

Solid lifters right?
they should be kept in order, otherwise they have to adjust them again.

Solid tappets are just shims of different thicknesses to obtain the correct valve clearance and keeping them in order will save some time for the shop if nothing is done with the valve or valve seats but when resurfacing the valves seats or replacing the valves the shop must go through and check the clearances and move around or replace the tappets to get the right clearances anyway. Shouldn't be a big deal for them but they may try to charge you for more the extra time. If they do try to charge you more you can question them about about the clearances changing when doing the valve job or replacing any of the valves and having to check for and adjust for the changing clearances as needed anyway.

If you provide the exact model S60 you have, engine mainly, one could look up the part number for replacement lifters.

Some Volvo engines have hydraulic lifters and some don't. See this post: viewtopic.php?t=45924

Another reason to keep them in order is to match up with wear patterns.

Thanks everyone. They are charging me and extra 2 hours which in my estimation is what I get for not watching as many videos on this before taking it apart. I told my kid I would pay the extra labor since he’s paying for everything else. 😂

It would be great info if you could follow up with what the shop found. I am curious to know how much variation the tappets have when they come from the factory. Is there any pattern? Would be good information.

I will see if I can get some detail from them and post it.
