So a buddy of mine bought a 2009 XC90 with the 3.2 engine with only 29k miles. It basically looks brand new. Drove it from Colorado to Ohio...and snapped the passenger side drive shaft 25 miles from home. Putting a new one in this weekend. I've done all the maintenance on his Volvos because I have only ever owned Volvos and like to keep them on the road.
Apparently the car has visited the dealer for maintenance every year and was just driven 2-3k miles a year. It appears everything is in great shape, though this axle snapped, so apparently at least THAT wasn't in great shape. My question is: what all should I look at here? While I'm replacing the axle, what else should I peek at to make sure it's in good shape? Thanks for any ideas. I know the whiteblock motors incredibly well, but this 3.2 is a new beast for me.

Do you mean cv axle? That would make sense if the boot failed.
Other than that I would change the timing belt, at least inspect it (if it has one - never worked on that engine). Serpentine belt. Belts age poorly and are pretty important. Then any fluids that one would do on a 12 year old car. Coolant would be smart and brake fluid would make the most sense. Check the battery. After that I would just go over it and drive it listening for any noises, which there should be done.

I own two 3.2s with the Volvo engine (2008 Land Rover LR2 3.2, 2010 Volvo S80 3.2)
The XC90 is slightly different but similar enough that you should look at the same items that I changed for my 3.2s
I would start with the following
1. Motor mount https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic32979.html
2. Thermostat https://www.freel2.com/forum/post354468.html#354468
3. Review the list for 3.2 common items https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic32504.html
4. Check to see if the Overdrive pulley works on the serpentine belt (just try to move the bely at the AC compressor, it should move easily in one direction and not at all in the other)
If you want to see what I did for my 2010 S80 that I bought used you can look at this link viewtopic.php?f=31&t=87687
Note: the 3.2 has a timing chain not a timing belt so you can skip changing the timing belt but the serpentine belt is very difficult to change and you should look into changing it
Good luck
Paul
