2002 V70 XC throwing TCM-001F and TCM-0020 error codes: which transmission speed sensors need replacing?

Post by 2001downunderxc70 »

As title says, my Volvo came up "TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED" and is throwing TCM-001F and TCM-0020 error codes:

TCM-0020 Transmission Output Speed Sensor (Faulty signal)
TCM-001F Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (Signal Missing) AW55-50/51SN Transmission

As far as I can tell there are three sensors related to this:

9495031 - Engine Speed Sensor (#15 on the diagram below)
30713952 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (#18 on the diagram below, and there are two of them, front and rear?)

But the diagram below is super confusing. Can anyone let me know which ones need replacing with these error codes? Just the 9495031 or the 30713952 as well? I have a donor XC90 nearby which I can salvage the 30713952 sensors from, but not the 9495031 sensor. While we're at it... I get that a sensor measures transmission speed output (and that the sensor has failed, hence the clunky shifting), but what do the three of these sensors do exactly?

Any advice greatly appreciated.
