2006 V70T Throwing codes and scaring wife

Post by obayha »

At 112,000 miles, my wife had her first CEL come on. I am at work and she is trying to go somewhere.
She took it to Auto Zone and I don't know the numbers but she told me AZ said it was O2 sensor defective, Ignition misfire/repair and fuel injector problem. We purchased the car at 46,000 from a Volvo dealer and have only changed the oil at proper times and air filter. I figured Volvo did a tune up before selling, so am I right in thinking this thing just needs a tune up and that should fix it or am I missing something?
If so, what would need to be replaced?
Any other thoughts would be helpful.

Drove 1500 miles over Thanksgiving, but have noticed it has been a little slow on the starting. Not slow in cranking , just doesn't fire on first turnover as before.

First thing that comes to mind is timing belt, based on your mileage. But that's unrelated to the codes described. Speaking of codes, a list of codes along with maf level, fuel trims, o2 sensors signal graphs will be helpful to understand what's going on with the engine. A good scanner will give that. Based on AZ findings a lot of stuff is bad and hopefully that's not the case.

Changed the plugs for now and sounds like things are back to normal. They had over 70,000 miles on them. Will get the CEL off tomorrow and if it stays off, it's a good day.

The CEL light is about a misfire. It can trigger other codes such as the oxygen sensor code, but there is little chance the sensor to be faulty at these miles. Also, don't forget to tighten well the gas tank cap after refilling.

After the plugs, you may want to keep an eye at the ignition coils - no need to replace all 5 of them, just the one(s) faulty.

Thanks for the replies. This car has run perfect from the day I purchased it and if maintained well, should last longer than mine. Thinking the same about the misfire throwing the other codes, but if it comes up again, then I'll look into the ignition coils.

Update to finish this post.
The CEL turned off yesterday while doing Christmas shopping. Didn't know it would do that.
One present I didn't need to purchase.

A Misfire code is about the only code that will shut off by itself when the problem is fixed, so Merry Xmas for that and just keep an eye on it.

You probably need a new battery, it's about time for a 2006. These cars do not like a low battery, the electrical system has fits!
At 112K you have many things to spend your money on. The T Belt MUST be done fairly soon,
You need to test and probably replace the breather system unless you have been using synthetic oil.
Transmission fluid MUST be changed.
Someone needs to go over your suspension, at these miles it's about shot, (struts, shocks AND springs)!

Spend the money now and you should be good to go for another 100K miles with hopefully only normal maintenance
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Agreed, but 70,000 miles on plugs??

Coolant changes, brake fluid changes, transmission drain amd fills, suspension parts,TBELT are all due.

A 100k oxygen sensor will be sluggish compared to new, and if it runs lean, it costs you an engine.

I don't understand. Could you expand on this?

I thank everyone for the replies, and all those items are on my Christmas list :D .
JRL good to know that a misfire code will reset itself. Makes me think, that is what it had to be.
It is getting time to invest some preventive money into the 06, cause it is the main mover in the family and I want it to run awhile. Is the TB around 120,000? I think that is what the manual stated, and is it about the same change as the 98 I work on?
Battery was done last years. This is the year that all the lights are failing one at a time.
I'll start collecting parts and get ready for a warm weather day and do some things.
O2 sensor at 100,000, Is it just something that should be done?
Purchased the car with around 46,000 on it and figured the dealer gave it a tune up before purchased, so at 112,000, the plugs had 66,000 on them, so just 4,000 of 70,000, and the parts guy at Volvo said you can expect 60,000 from a set.
Coolant is a slow leak so it is changed regularly. Another problem to address down the mechanical road.
