ball joint woes

Post by chris11211 »

New ball joint i installed almost 2 years ago has started to make a loud screeching sound when I turn the wheel. Took pics of it to find that the boot doesn't seem torn, but it seems to have gathered what seems to be rust. Don't know if it's something that can be cleaned or its just something that I have to replace. Thoughts? IPD HD ball joints

That's very strange, are you sure the noise is coming from the ball joint? I'm not sure what brand those ones were but it seems that water ingress has occurred and rust is coming out, seems unusual since the boots aren't split. If you got two years out of some aftermarket brand bj's you did well. Get some OEM Volvo ones from IPD or FCP whatever is cheapest and be done with it.

The thing is, this is Ipd ball joints. Sucks that I got it from an ebay seller - no lifetime warranty for me. I think I'm gonna just buy another ipd, all is see is cracked rubber from lemforder idk, have to wait till tommorow to buy something.

Is there another method of installing the joint besides buying the cta tool? I don't want to buy it only to return it because I'm not exactly a mechanic and have it lying around for years.

Looks like the ball joint is not correctly tightened. Could be the photo.

Have you looked at the joint itself? Move the the circle clip and push the boot down. I don't see how it could rust with no signs of boot damage or grease release ---- unless -- there is no grease inside.

You mean the boot?

Gonna have to look at it tomorrow. Even if it is loose then it would be too late as the grease should be filled with dirt.

I would inject some oil or grease into the boot, it will keep at least until warm weather comes.

You don't need the special tool for installing the ball joint, you can easily use the bolts to "press" it in, just make sure you clean the bore out when you get the old one out. Then torque the bolts appropriately.

That rust is indeed strange. It looks like it's completely rusted inside the boot and accumulating water, if so, the boot was not tight enough with the clip. Once you undo the control arm from the stud, turn the bj by hand,if it's good it should be quite difficult to turn. May also squeeze the boot see if rusty water comes out somewhere . Lemforder makes the genuine ones

To me it looks like the bottom seal ring clips are rusting. The rust is pretty uniform around the bottom of the seals on both sides and on the outside. Are you certain the noise you're hearing when turning the wheel is coming from the ball joint(s)?

Question.

When I push the car down and it starts to squeak then it should be the ball joint right?
