P2 XC70 - 18" Pegasus rims - summer tire size question

Hi Everyone,

I've looked around multiple volvo forums and have yet to get definitive clarity on this question. I'm hoping one of us has first hand insight before i make my purchase on new summer tires.

I'm the proud new owner of some second hand OEM 18" peg wheels.


i believe stock tire size for the S60R or V70R calls for 235/40/18.


In northern New England, roads are less than perfect late spring and through summer, to avoid any issues with bend/crack rims, curb rash etc, I plan to deviate from the stock "called for" tire size.

therefore i would like to have a 245mm width & 45mm profile, ultimately a 245/45/R18 tire.

My 2006 xc70 is currently stock suspension height. From everything i read it sounds like 245/45 should fit, but again there was some ambiguity.


Would anyone here be able to clarify any issues with rubbing or fitment, before I invest in new tires?

mine are 245/45 r18 and they rub on full lock (i dont have stoppers) i thought that was stock size as i used the tyre website to get close to the stock size. my speedo is spot on according to GPS. the previous owner had huge tyres fitted 245/55r 18 i think, they didnt rub but where horrible, felt like driving a boat and the speedo was off, the PO said "ohh you will get good milage"

can you post a pic of how much weights were used for balancing, also get a volvo spacesaving spare to match

Another size option is 235/50-18. It will give you the exact same deviation from stock as the 245/45 (1.1%, but just + vs -). But, it will have an extra .3" of sidewall height which is going to go a lot further towards protecting against wheel damage than the wider/lower set up you are contemplating. Check out tiresize.com and play with the numbers and it should help you figure where your comfort zone is. Use the comparison tab and it can show you sidewall height, etc.

I lived in norther VT a while and on another car, experimented with the combo that gave me the best ride/handling trade-off and I decided then a 50 ratio was about the best to avoid harshness and damage.
