Hello Folks
2000 V70 XC AWD with turbo
P0442 code, fuel tank cap replaced with factory new, still new CEL every day or so.

Scouring the internet I see no reference to year 2000 of this model its makin me nuts. I suspect they are the same as 1999 or 2001. Before I start cutting a hole in the trunk area (please god no) to access / search for a cracked tube I'm hoping to find someone who knows the location to look for
1. carbon cannister, J tube
2. that valve that shuts off seals the evap system until cold start
3. the solenoid that controls the vacuum, pressure, whatever it is
Volvo seems to move things around to different locations ad nauseum

One location is under intake manifold which is a hideaous pain even when the engine is out of the car, I did that prior to this engine was installed.

3 solid hours today came up with nothing Volvos are so damn weird sometimes.

Ah, opened up Haynes and they say carbon can is behind Left rear wheel well. that valve gizmo is mounted on the cooling fan shroud .

Anyone have further suggestions? Now I know where to begin a search for cranked rubber tubes.

Hi Rocket

Take a look at this: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=48855

It's usually elbows, but at 20 years old it could be hoses, their fit and tightness, or something else. Start there, looking at the elbow and hoses first.

When my 850 was 15 years old I went nuclear and started to rewire the engine bay hoses with new, HD line, eliminating elbows. viewtopic.php?p=233700#p233700

Your car is a P80, 1992-2000 MY. 2001-2007 MY is P2, totally different. I moved this into P80. I switched the order of the forums on the forums index page weeks ago to confuse you and thousands of others. My work bears fruit.

Have you considered smoke testing for your leak?

I have a 2000 XC and had this issue. Took off the round plate in rear trunk area above the fuel tank and had a small hose cracked open.
2000 V70XC - 340,000 miles

The main pipes to look at are at the rear in a 2000 AWD. The carbon canister which is at the back of the car just in front of the fuel filter on the rear sub-frame has 2 x approx. 3/4" pipes entering and leaving it. Viewed from the rear the one on the right runs around toward the front of the car. It likes to split anywhere on it's length. The other pipe to it also can split but usually near where it enters the carbon canister. Also check the pipes into and out of the roll-over valve on the RHS of the carbon canister.

Yes. It is just forward of the fuel filter on the top of the rear sub-frame and just above the rear axles. The carbon canister (approx. 12" x 6" x 3" black box) is mounted on a securing plate, and on the rear of that is the fuel filter.

In the picture above you can see the carbon canister and fuel filter. The main pipe to look at is the one coming out of the rear right that is between the fuel filter and the canister. It is about 6" lone like a flattened 'U'. The other end goes to the roll over valve and you can see a pipe that runs out to the right. That runs up to the fuel filler. You really have to remove the pipes or the fuel filter to look properly at the pipe condition. Mine was of course split on the underside by the carbon canister.

Which is a good idea and may be necessary to get to the bottom of this.
The "leak" may not be one large leak but rather the sum of many small leaks.
The "leak' may not be a hole but rather a porous hose that looks OK.

haven't got the foggiest how that works .... have heard of the "dreaded" smoke test.

Volvos are the weirdest .... absolutely. When It runnin good its a pleasure to drive. As soon as you need information, parts, to simply located a component its a fuckin nightmare. I worked on mid 80s mercedes for years, wonderful, It is totally inconceivable there would ever be a big "to so" to simply find a component. That is routine with this bizarre thing. Volvo designers after about 1998 (I hear) went nuts. WAY too many gizmos, computers, in one location for part of the model year and in another later the same year.k, different ways and differnt components (all overpriced) different electrical, arrangements locations of doing things, densiity of tubes wires routings. Its a huge joke but I got this car free and need an automatic transmission car. As soon as I no longer do need an automatic car and this one needs a major repair Its going off a cliff into the ocean
