Turbo Replacement Help

Post by alvineinstein »

Please forgive me if this question has been asked before, and if so, please direct me to it.

I have a 1998 V70 AWD with 182,000 miles on it which is spewing oil from the turbo like it's cool. I loose about a quart every 100 miles.

I have in mind to replace the turbo but I don't want to spend more than the car is worth.

My questions are that I believe I can find parts that look like they'd fit on eBay:

CHRA - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Turbo-core-491 ... 3545895228

Bypass Valve - https://www.ebay.com/itm/MTC-turbo-bypa ... 3685905316

Wastegate Actuator - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Volvo-S60-S80- ... 2999660541

My intent is not to have a race car, but to have a car that isn't spewing oil and will function for many more years.

My specific question is: Am I going to get a wastegate actuator and bypass valve with too stiff of a spring that allows for too much boost and blows out other seals accidentally or are most wastegate actuators and bypass valves universal for those turbos?

My understanding is that the computer based on throttle position, mass air flow, RPM, etc controls the turbo control valve which will open and control the wastegate actuator and maybe bypass valve.

I don't know if I understand that correctly, but if I do, am I correct in assuming that as long as I adjust the wastegate actuator to 1.8 psi that maybe I can get the actuator that looks correct on eBay and be ok?

Also I'm assuming that I have TD04HL-13G? VIN: YV1LW5644W2421990

Your 98 V70 AWD should have a 13G if it is standard.

Looking at your list I do not know any of the vendors, but does not mean they are bad. The last item in your list is shown as suitable for a 14G not 13G.

If you are stuck, I have a used 13G under my workbench that has been sitting there for a while. I have it inspected by the shop foreman at Volvo. It was from a running 98 V70 XC that was parted out.

Biggest issue will be shipping cost to US.

I would follow the recommendations of the linked thread Rick has posted above. IT is not common for the turbo to fail. They can get oily with age and seals for the oil pipes can leak.

Neil.

Thank you RickHaleParker. I actually read that thread last night, but I didn't see that it answered my question about accidentally getting the wrong wastegate actuator or bypass valve.

My thought is, "if it fits, it's the correct one".

I guess my question stated another way is, "are all the wastegate actuators and bypass valves the same for all TD04 turbos?" i.e. "is the wastegate actuator off a high pressure turbo ex. TD04HL-15T going to be the same for the lower pressure turbo ex. TD04HL-13G"

My worry, like I say before is that I get a wastegate actuator and/or bypass valve that allows too much boost pressure and I end up blow seals or other parts of the engine that aren't built for the extra boost pressure.

Thank you Neil - I'll keep that in mind.

I truly appreciate your help. Thank you.

I also don't know about the CBV and wastegate actuator interchangeability among the 13g, 15t and 16t, without hitting the search button. However I suspect the stock ones are identical, but that aftermarket you are rolling the dice.

I think Rick was referring to the "spewing oil" aspect of the other thread, not that is answered your parts question: 182,000 miles is nothing for a TD-04HL turbo, so be sure to confirm that the turbo is actually the problem.

I've got two spare, working-well 13g turbos as well. Both were working fine when pulled; the lower mileage one is like 150k. I'll never use them.
