POLL: When did your family start using seatbelts?
I remember even in the 80s one friend's family didn't use seatbelts. My grandparents had my sister and me use seatbelts as far back as I can remember, which is the 70s. They were lap belts back then for us. I've always used a seatbelt, except for the odd trip with ~8 teenagers in the car, when I was a teen.

My parents had 10 kids. They use to strap some of us to the roof of the car. Does that count as seatbelts?

By the late 60's the '62 Chevy without seat belts was replaced by a couple year old Plymouth Fury III. Mom made us wear seat belts although there were 4 kids in the back seat. We had to use one lap belt for two kids. Fortunately, we did not have a test crash to see how that worked.

I remember clearly a trip from Denver to Duluth MN and then to Rainy Lake. Duluth has steep streets down to the water. My dad was driving in a strange city looking for directions. He missed a red light and slammed on those American power brakes which locked up immediately. Little me standing up in the back seat went flying forward and hit the bridge of my nose on the hard top edge of the front bench seat. Nothing broken somehow, but it hurt.
That was a '66 Ford Galaxie wagon, so I'm guessing it was sometime right after that!
Funny, I remember in the early 70s trying to talk them into a 140 wagon, but they decided not to spend the money. My mom always called them "Vovos."

My father's first car had seat belts. He kept that car from New in 1957 till he sold the South Florida home in 1999. Hearing him talk about that car makes me kick myself for not taking it... I do however remember buckling up in that car. My Father was insistent about that. June
