2003 s40 AC Problems

Post by glenh2nd »

Last summer I noticed that when I have my AC set to manual mode it will blow at different speeds for no reason. I will set the fan speed to #3 and it will fluctuate between hardly anything back up to #3 then down again. When I set it to automatic everything seemed to work fine so I didn't worry about it.

Sunday I noticed my AC kept kicking on and off in auto mode. The green light on the AC button kept going on and off for no apparent reason. When it's on it blows nice and cold but you can feel the difference immediatly when the AC button light turns to red.

What do you think, AC control head?

Help please.

I suspect the A/C resistor or power pack going out. It's located near the blower fan behind the glove box on 850's and early 70 series. Not sure on yours but probably the same area.

I replaced the fan resistor, AKA fan speed control module, and it's better but still not completely fixed. Now when I turn on the AC it at least stays on but my fan still blows erratically. While I was there I figured out why my air volume was kind of low also. My AC filter was totally dirty so I replaced it.

If the power pack (resistor) is good, your fan might be going out. The drain on the power pack from a failing fan is often the reason the power pack goes bad to begin with. If you keep running your fan in this condition, it will ruin your new power pack in time.
