850 ECC troubleshooting

Post by JLv70t5 »

Hell everyone, ive been reading forums trying to find one to point me in the right direction, but i havent had much luck. Ive seen plenty of topics about it so im hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I have 1996 850 glt with ECC. The blower motor doesnt work on any setting or speed. The REC and AC lights blink when i start the car and whenever i try to turn on the fans. I saw the post about how to pull blink codes and will be making one of the tools in a couple days when I'm free.

Fuses are good. Is there a relay for the climate control? I hot wired the blower fan and it turns on. Ive tested the wires too the fan and they are getting power.

Ive read that if the resistor is bad it will normally still work on one speed. Is this true with ECC or only MCC? Or is it still possible that the resistor is bad? I dont want to replace it if its not the culprit. So how do i go about testing the resistor? Ive found ways to test the MCC resistors but havent found any info on diagnosing the ECC.

Again if anyone has some insight or can lead me to a thread it will be greatly apreciated.

It will always work when hotwired...problem is that it pulls too much current when connected properly and ecc puts it out of use to protect circuits and power stage.

It's probably seized, common problem, and you can put a few drops of oil on the bearings on the shaft on both sides...on top of it and under the propeller.

Also check the brushes on the motor which are visible when you remove the plastic cover....it could be that they are worn and shorting out intermittently.

Thanks. Ill pull it out and check how the brushes look. If they look good ill grease it and see if that works. Anything else i should check? I pulled the pollen filter and cleaned it for now

If lubrication will not solve the problem....new or used blower will be your next step.

New one doesn't need re-greasing.

Did you ordered complete assembly or just the motor?

You will need to transfer the plastic propeller and plastic casing to new motor.

For pulling the plastic propeller(blower) you will need a puller tool.
After it's removed...just lightly tap it onto the new motor shaft and be careful not to damage the new motor.

Press in the blower onto the new motor shaft at exactly the same spot.
If you press it in too low it will grind onto the plastic casing....if it's too high...it will grind at car's housing.

Good luck!

Thanks! I got the new motor installed and it works perfectly. The housing however was full of water. I believe my windshield seals are the culprit. Or is there something else that could drain into there? It was definitely water and not coolant. I rtvd the seals and cleared the 2 windshield drains (one was pretty gunked up with leaves). Im wondering if the water getting in is what fried the blower to begin with.
