won't start : 93 940 non turbo wagon

Post by Lou Rosenbaum »

turn key car doesn't turn over. Lights work, moving shifter has no effect. How do I check the solenoid? Where is the solenoid?
How about the lock out in the shifter? How can I check that ? If I put power on the starter would that be a bad thing?Would it tell me anything?
I have a meter and can kinda use it.
I read the March 28th 240 won't start sounded the same but that problem did not have an outcome
Thanks Lou R

First thing in this type of situation is to check the battery leads for cleanliness and tightness. Pay special attention to the earth (ground) lead where it fastens to the frame. Also check the earth (ground) strap from the engine to the frame.

The solenoid is on top of the starter motor. This diagram shows how to test the solenoid off the car. It can be done on the car but is a little bit more fiddly getting the leads into place. You are, in effect, putting power to the starter.

Testing the lock out or inhibitor is a little more complicated. Try the above first and if you need the other info post back.
