newbie to Timing belt job

Post by azureblue »

I have done timing belts on my red blocks and a DOHC FIAT ( ;-) ), but this will be the first time on my white block. I see there is a VVT cam lock tool that is needed - Would someone be so kind as to rent one to me (with deposit, of course) when I get to the job in a couple of weeks?
I have read about kevlar TBs. Is there one for the white block?

cam lock isn't needed unless you plan on pulling the cam hubs from the camshafts.
You should be able to slip the belt around the crank pulley by only removing the lower dust shield, 2 10MM bolts.

Strongly suggested is the OEM timing kit, water pump, tensioner, idler pulley etc.
FCP or IPD have the correct kit.
Its not that much more involved from the red block, just a bit tight space wise.
You shouldn't have too bad of a time with it.

Thanks - I was planning on doing the water pump as long as I am in there, and of course the tensioner and pulley. I thought the VVC cams had to locked into position so the VVT part would not throw off the timing while putting the belt on.. This is definitely not a job to cheap out on.. and thanks for the comparison to the red block.

Before removing the old belt....
Make reference marks for the cam hubs to block position when its lined up with timing marks on plastic cover, some cam hubs are spring loaded and will move when the belt is taken off. I used white touch up paint, transfer timing mark to backside of cam hubs and then transfer that mark to the engine block.

To install...
Start at crank pulley. Pull the belt up to the intake cam sprocket.
All you do is move the hub back to the reference marks you made, then put the belt on the cam hub to hold it in place, do the same for the second hub, once the belt is on it will hold the hubs, keep hand tension on belt until its all the way installed on water pump .

I like this video, it covers everything. You probably don't need all this info but the painted marks on the block might come in very useful if you lose cam timing like we did.

FCP Euro carries Gates Blue Kevlar Timing Belts for Volvo white blocks. They run $127.20 for just the belt. Lifetime guaranteed. Net cost for a replacement is return shipping for the last one you bought.

The whole Volvo white block engine alignment kit is about $50.00 on eBay.

This may be the most important link for the timing belt job - finding the bottom mark.
If the earlier video shows removing the harmonic balancer, keep looking. You don't have to removed the balancer to change the timing belt.

I’ve got a spare one I can send down to you, let me see what shipping would be in a small box. I did recently buy the complete kit and have this left over.

You dont need it if you are keeping VVT hubs on but it’s nice if you are doing seals

Much thanks for the offer. I will get in touch with you when I am ready to do the belt. Yeah on the CC timing mark find. I have read it's hard to see down in there.
