Hate to tell you this but on your car, the location is yet another silly Volvo design for the express purpose of making the Volvo service department some extra $$. It's all a major PITA.
On your car (I looked this up in VADIS so it's definitely true) you have to remove the sound proof paneling on the drivers side, then remove the accelerator (gas) pedal, fold the carpet out of the way, then from the side of the center console/lower dash area you have to unbolt 3 screws which allows the cover to the air filter box to hinge up, then slide the air filter out towards and past where the gas pedal was and out from behind the brake pedal. The filter has arrows on it so take notice. The replacement should go in wit the arrows facing the same direction. The new one slides in the same way (after compressing it slightly and pushing it in from behind the brake pedal and past where the gas pedals was into its slot).
Ok, to remove the sound proof panel, is no easy task either. There are 3 screws...2 at the lower end and one up near the air vent, left of the steering wheel as well as 3 hidden clips at the upper edge. Once you get everything undone, you'll need pull down and out and be careful of the courtesy light connector that will also have to come apart in order to fully remove the panel. You might be able to leave it be if you can hinge the panel over and up against the side of the car if you have room to work under their that way. For the pedal that requires removing, undo the 3 6M nuts on the accelerator pedal and move it out of the way. After you replace the air filter, tighten the nuts on the pedal to 7.5 lbs foot each. I'd say it's going to be hard to get a torque wrench in there so I would just tighten hand tight and then maybe a half to 3/4 revolution after that...sort of like you do with a spark plug is you don't have a torque wrench. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Well, it's complicated on the V50. The short story is that it's in the tunnel console, accessible from under the dash on the driver's side:
Remove the Accelerator Pedal (yes, today may be April 1st, but that's no joke)
NB: to get to the accelerator and for the rest of the operations, you need to remove the driver's side soundproofing panel under the steering wheel, if you've never done this, I'll post instructions.
Fold down carpet away from center of dash.
Remove three screws on the filter cover.
Remove filter by sliding it behind brake pedal.
Install the new filter, making sure that the "Air Flow" arrows point "straight back into the vehicle." [Check the old one for orientation]
I don't know how handy you are...if these steps are Greek to you, post back and I'll post the instructions from the Volvo manual when I get a chance tomorrow (or one of the other members might beat me to that punchline.)
