Turbo to Exhaust Mystery

Post by renegade420 »

I don't remember seeing one drop out but I feel that there is possibly supposeed to be one but can anyone please tell me if there is supposed to be a gasket right here between the turbo and downpipe? (Picture is NOT of my car, it's just for reference.)

I do believe that there is a small fiber ring gasket and a thin metal one. Just replaced them on my 2002 V70 X/C a few months ago.

It’s a composite metal fiber gasket that sits there

One of the "World's many mysteries". Some have them some don't, some have one style some another, Vin says yes, car says no.

If you didn't see one then it most likely didn't come with one. In the end all I could determine was it depended on whether exhaust parts were chamfered or not. I suppose you could take it apart and look for age marks, maybe it "burned up" over the years.

Is it louder? Do you see any signs of exhaust leakage?

UPDATE Thanks for the replies everyone. I ended up finding the gasket. It must have dropped and "rolled away" from me more or less. It is in the shape of a large o-ring and is made out of what seems to be cork wrapped in tinfoil. It's burned to a crisp too.

Nice find. I know the part as I purchased it and the three holed one for a Volvo only to find mine didn't need one.

In the end, if I recall the dealer said it was suppose to have the three hole one which I knew was not possible or I would have seen it. The one they sold me didn't fit so their computer was wrong. After more research I cam across some information saying the car I had didn't come with one.

Regardless the one you mention can be found on-line or at the dealer. If you go to the dealer, assuming they have it in stock, bring it along for good measure (pun intended).

Unfortunately my box of shame, unused wrong purchases, is in another state or I would send it to you.
