The light comes on when there is still close to an inch of coolant still in the reservoir. Pleanty of time to pull over and top up.
Just make sure to open the cap very slowly to let the pressure equalize.

OKey Dokey. Just got back from a run to town. Cooant in reservoir is one inch higher than when its cold.

Oops, this looks very bad. Blue fluid in block leak test fluid looking for exhaust gasses in coolant did not turn color, remains blue ..... but there is some increased pressure in the coolant space. That aint coming from nowhere.

The coolant level fluctuates when you run. That’s normal

It should be between min and Max when cold. Don’t go over the max mark when cold

Cooant in reservoir is one inch higher than when its cold.

It is called an expansion tank and for a good reason. Things expand when they warm up and contract when they cool down.

As a lifelong Minnesotan I'm going to quibble a little and say that although water does expand when it crystallizes, once frozen the ice does shrink as it gets colder.

haven't got the foggiest how that works .... have heard of the "dreaded" smoke test.

Volvos are the weirdest .... absolutely. When It runnin good its a pleasure to drive. As soon as you need information, parts, to simply located a component its a fuckin nightmare. I worked on mid 80s mercedes for years, wonderful, It is totally inconceivable there would ever be a big "to so" to simply find a component. That is routine with this bizarre thing. Volvo designers after about 1998 (I hear) went nuts. WAY too many gizmos, computers, in one location for part of the model year and in another later the same year.k, different ways and differnt components (all overpriced) different electrical, arrangements locations of doing things, densiity of tubes wires routings. Its a huge joke but I got this car free and need an automatic transmission car. As soon as I no longer do need an automatic car and this one needs a major repair Its going off a cliff into the ocean

I agree that the PCV and evaporative emissions systems seem to have been altered repeatedly by designers. I have a 98 V70 non-turbo and 1999 S70 T5. The subsystems mentions are entirely different and are also different from the many How-To threads and DIY videos most of which speak to the most common models with no indication that there are variations between models and model years. Most of the posters seem to think that what they have on their particular car is universal because they have only dealt with a certain subset of P80s. The parts and service manuals are of less use than one would expect because they will show five variations of a system with no indication of which models and years employed which. Not all Volvo documentation is this troublesome. These two systems are just the worst examples.
