Update:
Today I used a fluid vacuum extractor to remove the overfilled fluid. I removed between half and 3/4 of a liter while the car was up to temp and while it was still running. I checked the dip stick a few times to make sure that I was not over the hot mark.
The transmission now at the correct level feels the same way it did when the old fluid was in it.
When it was overfilled, it actually felt smoother and the shifts between gears, park, neutral, reverse also felt smoother.
Any reason why the transmission would feel smoother when it's overfilled?
Anyone else experience this?

In my 2003 V70 I found that I had to slightly overfill the fluid in order to stop some slipping I was experiencing on the coldest of mornings when turning left up hill and accelerating all at the same time. As I recall I had to overfill by about 1/2 qt.
