what makes a clunking sound

Post by azureblue »

that sounds like it is coming from the strut towers, when I roll over a bump at slow speeds? And I just replaced the strut assemblies, L / R? The upper engine mount / brace looks good, but the cross bar seems to move a bit easy, more in one direction. I shook the cross bar / mount assemble and looked for something loose or worn rubber, but I didn't see anything. Ideas?

Like I said, I just replaced the strut assemblies, so the only possibility left, is the bottom picture. What is the official name of this piece? The cross bar is a bit easy to wiggle front to back on my car, but the engine mount is pretty solid and shows no sign of wear.

Have a real good look at your Lower Control arms, particularly the bottoms of the front bushings and the bushings themselves. When the bushings wear out they can often allow the LCA to make contact with the subframe creating the noise you describe. Also could be a lower ball joint. Those would be my two best guesses.

Thanks - The Upper Torque Rod Bracket (Strut Tower brace?) Mounting brackets rubber was worn. The noise sounded like it was coming from behind the dashboard, so there wasn't much left besides that part and the upper strut mounts that would make the clunks. An R&R and it's quiet. Much thanks
