2000 S70- air conditioning pushes hot air & makes this sound

Post by sabin333 »

Hi. Longtime forum lurker here. You guys have saved me a few times and I'm hoping that you'll be up to the challenge of listening to this strange sound that my air conditioning is making:

http://nowindowsproductions.com/weird_v ... _sound.mp3

Here's the problem:
The air conditioning is moderately cool and then after about 5 minutes of driving it starts pushing out hotter and hotter air until it's like the heat is on (notice that it's summer in PA).

My local mechanic replaced the freon, but that didn't fix it. He didn't know what to do. Maybe the sound that I've linked above will provide the answer?

Where was the recording made? In the cabin or under the hood?

Your underlying problem with cold air for a while and then it gets hot is typical of an AC compressor clutch gap problem. Search the site and or the repair database for "Bread Clip Fix" and see if the symptoms match.

As far as the sound goes, I have no idea.

Do you have ECC? If so the system has several servos that operate it. Drop the dash under-trays and run the ac. Chances are one of the servos is faulty and is cycling or has lost its position. Also, could be one of the air flaps has stuck.

That's a stuck damper door. I know the sound well. Sometimes going from full heat to full cold will shut it up on my car - or you may need to go into the center tunnel and investigate. If you search "damper motor fix" or something of the sort, there are several threads on various fixes for re-learning the positions or fixing broken motor arms.

As for the AC going hot - yep, you're in need of the bread clip compressor clutch fix.

The sound reminded me of the room next door at a cheap motel I stayed at in Juneau. :D
