Ext temperature sensor problem

Post by DECKELITE »

Hi you all

I recently experienced problems with the outside temp indicator on my 98' V70.

It generally indicates a warmer temp than the real one.

Is there something I could check ?

Thanks in advance

I think it's the same for everybody. The sensor is located just under the front bumper and the heat from the road, especially during the summer will cause the reading to be high.

Hi Steve, and thanks for your response.

I don't think the problem comes from road heat, because we already had pretty low temperatures here, and the car always indicates a noticeably higher temp than expected...
Not to mention that I usually park my car on a grass area.

Do you know where is the sensor exactly behind the front bumper ?

It's located near the passenger side foglight, slightly towards the center. It is a plastic plug with a wire running out of it stuck into the plastic cover under the front bumper, it should be really easy to find.

Does anyone know if this probe is used by the engine management computer or is it strictly for the OAT indicator on the dash?

I would think that it's also used by the onboard computer, because the little snowflake to the right of the clock goes on when the temperature goes below freezing and I think (I'm not sure) it switches the transmission to 'W' mode.

The trans must be put into W mode via the switch. The trans will not automatically change modes.

The snowflake icon is an indication to the driver that the tempurature is cold enough that road ice is a potential hazard.... these are Swedish cars and they get winter big time...

The "W" or winter mode is a manually engaged mode that sets the transmission to start in second gear (less torque to the wheels to lessen the chance of wheelspin).
