850 Reverse light manual override option?

Post by SonicAdventure »

Ok, so many of us have had issues with PNP switches over the years and I understand this idea would not overcome the various start and no-start issues that PNP switches can cause. But...

I have an extra rear fog light on/off rocker for an 850. I've pulled the empty slot in the 850 console where the sport/economy switch goes if the car is RHD. The switch fits fine with lots of room under it for wires. I am trying to see if its possible to bypass (but not necessarily override) the PNP reverse light function, perhaps by tapping into the harness somewhere and wiring it to the "ON" pin of the accessory connector, and switching it at the center console.

If done perfectly according to my plan, the reverse lights would still come on when in reverse via the PNP switch, but I would also be able to turn them on via a switch when the car is in park. This would be helpful when loading in gear, or just trying to do anything behind the car at night.

Growing up, I had a friend who's Dad had an auto trans in an old Ford truck that was stick prior. The reverse lights were operated via a switch on the dash wired to constant hot. I think I recall them running the battery down once or twice due to leaving the reverse lights on after the car was parked. I don't know if it was wired to constant hot to pass inspection or what the deal was as this was over 20 years ago. But, I do see the value in being able to turn those lights on when you want them on, regardless of what gear you are in (or not in).

Thoughts?

Interesting idea...

I think it should work by tapping into the harness and having this switch wired parallel to the pnp.

Just be careful not to break the wiring harness

Anyone have a general idea of where the reverse light power wires branch off of the main wiring harness near the center console/firewall area? I'm trying to figure out if they run under the center console or if they run down alongside one of the front door sill plates.

Amost certainly along driver door sill plate. I dont think any wires run south of the center console from memory of stripping cars.
