I have been sorting out various front end clunks and rattles, beginning with replacing both strut assemblies, and inspection of the various end joints, which took care of most of the noises. That problem was a worn upper mount. But now I have to find this thunk / bonk in the left side. Like just one bonk at a time. It seems to happen when the weight of the front end is shifted - like from a hard left to straight ahead from a dead stop, or slowing down from a low speed, or / mild acceleration from a dead stop. Sometimes when making a wide left turn, with the road slanted to the right. . The noise sounds like it is coming from the upper left side almost like right behind the dash board. I have looked, shooked and pried, and didn't find anything in the A arms that looked worn or loose.
Ideas?
a thunk or a bonk

Have a look at these. I secured mine with washers on level ground so it is even, solid with no flex.

Sometimes the whole subframes just moves / floats and does not cause tire wear. My 03 S80 T6 has this pull and I'm down to the control arm bushing replacement. Process of elimination of replacing older parts at that age unless the bad part is obvious.

The crossbrace mounts was the 2nd thing I went for after I replaced the strut assemblies. I think I just need to start replacing mounts, etc., just out of age. The car has mostly highway miles on it but getting ready to turn 200K

Check the strut spring seats, also the control arm bushings with a prybar with the vehicle on jack stands. You can also get a real good look at the subframe bushings for condition at this time. Find the problem first before throwing parts at it, them replace with Volvo brand OEM parts. I wouldn't bother with inserts for the subframe, Bushings are cheap and easy to change, as are the other two parts I mentioned. You might also check the engine mounts, I had the one rear by the steering rack separate completely.

I saw a video on how to use inserts
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... erts%20diy
and they look easier to install than removing the old bushings.
