V70 cranks but won't start

Post by alanjackson »

Hello all, I hope someone out there can help me. I have a 2002 V70 petrol non-turbo that merrily cranks over but won’t start. Always after being left overnight on my drive.

It has done this twice before and after a few days it has started and run perfectly again for a few hundred miles, sweet as a nut. Can’t get it to start at all now.

I have a PPC – BSR code reader and it only finds the codes that have always been there CCM-0021 (cabin air quality), DDM-0030 (mirrors), UEM-004 (siren) and CEM-1A63 (AEM accessory add-on box).

I also have a DICE and VIDA although I am not very expert at using it; this shows PASS on all modules except the ones found by the other code reader.

I’ve have had the battery disconnected and on-charge overnight but that made no difference.

Should a bad cam or crank sensor give a failure code?

Can anyone out there suggest anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated – rapidly losing the little bit of hair I had!

Alan - on a P2 the fuel delivery system can die without any codes - if you have the no-start, check the fuel pressure at the rail for a solid 50 psi.

The trouble spots are ...

Fuel relay (bonded to the CEM) - usually goes with other things.
PEM - module located in the rear trunk or on top of tank. I recovered mine by cleaning it out and spraying contact cleaner.
Fuel pump in the tank.

The fuel pressure test tells if that is where to look

Thanks Abscate for the fuel suggestion. I have found the relay you mention and fortunatly it is a plug-in module.
Unfortunatly it did not solve the problem on my P2 V70. Relay seems OK because it now works my fof-lights.
If I remove the schrauder valve from the fuel rail and crank there is no fuel.
If I just turn on the ignition with the valve core removed should I see petrol being pumped out?
Should I be able to hear the pump in the tank running? Thanks again for the help.

I don't want to send you down the wrong path, but I thought that if you have a problem with the siren, then it immobilizes the car. Maybe someone else can chime in. It's well known that these sirens fail, so I'd look into that code and see if it may be contributing. Replacement of the siren by owner is doable, there is an instruction or YouTube video online.

I've had a bad siren in my 2003 V70 for about a year now. Although I get "faulty alarm system" message (may not be the exact wording) for about a half minute after starting the car, it does NOT inhibit the engine starting.

I have VIDA/DICE but am not very experienced with it either. I really thought you could check fuel pressure directly from this. Would someone chime in to tell OP whether this is the case.

And my siren has been dead for years also. It only affected sunroof.

No fuel at the rail is pretty indicative. The spec calls for 50 psi, 30 psi after 20 minutes after key off.

My limited experience is that the Pump Electronic Module or PEM is the weak Link in the System

More updates, still nothing.

Removed the fuel rail and disconnects.

Sprayed ether directly into ports. Not a thing.

I’m lost here…

Not sure if my posts are moved here, so updating here too. Sorry to repeat myself.
Update. It finally turned over after spark plug proper gapping!! Great news, but now it runs like a dog and I’ve got these codes:
p0201 p0202 p0203 p0204 p0205

Any ideas? Assuming I forgot something here, I know I’m close to fixing this thing.

Thanks again!
