XC70 engine removal

Post by darylrobert »

Replacing the engine in my 2001 XC70, "out the top" was actually easier than i expected, Vida recommends removal from bottom but Haynes says top.

Reason: old engine had major carbon build up, when i took the head off the cylinder linings/bores were very worn and not worth repairing, i think my car has done more Km's than what the DIM says.

Notes: Bonnet (hood) not removed. Didnt need to remove the lights, and dont need to remove the wiper cowl cover, i did that trying to lever off the cam cover.

Installation was just as easy lined up front (engine right) mount and the rear (engine left) landed automatically. Just keep an eye on the ABS pipes

Not sure if its a local thing but in looking for a replacement engine i found S60's have done on average half the mileage of a XC70

I like my 01 V70, nice to see people keeping them running. Just curious if you did anything like (timing belt, PCV or anything else), while the engine was out.

Yes the PCV is very important, and was partially blocked (looked untouched) as is changing the timing belt. I bought some new hoses (only use genuine Volvo) and used the oil separator box from my old engine which is clean. The oil seals is another thing that is super easy when the engine is out, and despite the the seller washing the engine i could see the seals were leaking, also changed the water pump to pipe seal. Have bought a volvo timing belt kit but will replace that when i am satisfied its a good engine plus i have 3 months warranty.

Basically try and not re-use gaskets, o rings etc as they will usually leak.

From what i have seen alot of these engine were destroyed during or soon after warranty because owners or volvo failed to replace/maintain the PCV system, which according to a youtube retired volvo mechanic leads to seals being blown and oil starvation.

Picture installing the new Clutch Dual mass flywheel and slave cylinder, also new silicon vacuum hoses for the Turbo Control valve

TIP Volvo uses LUK clutches and flywheels, you can save almost half the cost buying LUK without the Volvo stamp and blue box
TIP 2 the flywheel bolts are internal Splined heads (19J-XZN) NOT torx 55
