Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?
Just had a lower control arm ball joint failure over on the Volvospeed forum. Not something you want happening while you're cruising down the highway!

I'm halfway through control arm replacements on my xc90 and FCP sent me 2 left arms. So I'm waiting on a right side arms. In the mean time I've replaced the left control arm, ball joints and sway bar endlink. End project is fixing the AC clutch gap. Mine is at 0.7mm! I'm trying to remove the clutch. I've welded up a puller of sorts with 3 M5 screws into the face of the clutch. My center bolt is pushing against the 10mm clutch bolt that is unscrewed about 3-4mm. Im getting nowhere so far. For now its soaking in penetrant oil.

I have yet to actually pull one of those compressor clutches. Not something I would want to do... I tried once on my cousin’s car, and we ended up just going and getting a junkyard compressor.
Hopefully that penetrant works some magic and it comes off for ya!

You're kind of doing that backwards. You don't force on the center bolt, you use it as the stop, while you tighten the 3 bolts around it.ZionXIX wrote: ↑07 Aug 2021, 21:18 I'm halfway through control arm replacements on my xc90 and FCP sent me 2 left arms. The last time I did it, I didn't even use the center bolt as a stop, or a plate (even though I'd made one and attempted to use it). I just took the 3 screws I threaded into the clutch holes, which were long enough to bottom out behind the clutch. Tightening those evenly, each pushing against the area behind there, was enough to pop the clutch free. (With the center bolt out, obviously)

That was plan A, my bolt heads kept stripping so I resorted to the monstrosity you see here. Plan B.Chuck W wrote: ↑07 Aug 2021, 21:46You're kind of doing that backwards. You don't force on the center bolt, you use it as the stop, while you tighten the 3 bolts around it.

I replaced the steering fluid + an accident
The accident : some fluid ran over the top of the fluid reservoir and felt on the belt, the alternator and the AC compressor. They are anyway in a sad statement and I have planned to replace them by the new ones i bought for my V70 from 1998.
I will disassemble them during winter to clean them and put them as new as possible.

I suggest some better bolts.
I don't think the way you're trying to do that is going to yield good results.

My crazy homemade puller worked. The clutch fought for every mm and there were no signs of rust between the splines. I removed both shims and added some antisieze for the future. The clutch now sits at 0.4mm instead of 0.7mm. Test start confirms I didn't break anything. Apparently for the xc90 you need a T60 to release the belt tensioner. I made do with a stubby T55 and a breaker bar. Still can't drive the car until FCP sends me the right control arm. But at least I have AC!

Nice, glad it worked! I usually end up using a T55 just because the T60 is so hard to get into the tensioner sometimes. I actually found one of those Volvo tensioner tools (essentially a T60 welded to a thin beam) in a car and it works well in most cases.ZionXIX wrote: ↑08 Aug 2021, 18:15 My crazy homemade puller worked.
