Bumper Cover Repair Question

Post by Scoobey »

Hi, helpful folks. My wife backed into a mailbox in my 2009 C70, doing some damage to the rear bumper cover (photos attached). I'm unsure what the best way to fix this is. Could I glue or epoxy the loose flaps down and the missing chip (which I still have) in place? If so, how would I weatherproof the gaps and make them look ok without having to repaint the whole thing? Or should I pull the cover and do a full-on repair (or have it repaired)? Any suggestions appreciated!

Well it comes down to what "visually" you can live with. The new damage is in a area that has been previously repaired and not the original surfaces. Yes you should seal the damage as water will probably cause further issues. The yellow in the pic's is going to be a filler that might not be water proof. Use some touch up paint to seal it and maybe hold down the areas that show cracking, the cracking is more of the filler that has been damaged from the impact. Use some paint and if it does not bother you leave it, but to be right the filler would have to be removed and the cover refinished or replaced.

I literally hate it when that happens, Scoobey. My M-I-L bounced our car when she parked behind us by Braille, leaving two perfect round license plate screw holes in our cover. A child in drivers ed backed into a wood pile, and a round branch stuck a nice hole in the plastic.....

Because of these, I did some viewing of youtubes using mostly 3M body shop products, which are designed specifically for flexible plastic bumper covers. They're pretty ingenious, but yes, the cover comes off, sawhorses, sanding, feathering, epoxy, priming, painting, polishing.

Remove from car.
Heat with heat gun to slightly soften.
Massage pieces back into place.
Plastic weld into place on the back side and fill with JB Weld for plastic on the outside.
Shape outer contour and let the Epoxy cure for 24 hours.
Finish contour with sand paper.
Touch up paint flogging the edges.
Clear coat then buff.
