Torque-To-Yield Bolts - Oil or No Oil?

Post by Nevada1906 »

Evening all,

After 253,000 miles, the B5234T in my 1995 850 finally blew the head gasket.

Upgrade time.

So I went on eBay and bought a B5254T out of a 2004 S60R. I took it completely apart and it wasn't quite like new inside but close enough. I had all the major parts (block, head, cams, crank, intermediate section, oil pan) cleaned by the machine shop and am going to just reassemble it with fresh main, head and rod bolts - but I've hit a snag.

It seems that no matter where I look or what I read, I can't get a straight answer to a very basic question:

DO THE TORQUE-TO-YIELD MAIN, HEAD AND ROD BOLTS IN A VOLVO WHITEBLOCK GET INSTALLED DRY OR OILED?

I can find advice for lots of other engines, but the recommendations seem to be 50% Always Oil No Matter What Type Of Bolt and 50% Always Install TTY Bolts Dry. I have the factory service manual and it doesn't say anything about oiling the bolts, but that could just mean it assumes I'm familiar with the procedure already.

Help! I've been at this for a week!

I'm leaning toward dry based on what I know about TTY bolts, and of course all those YouTube videos of car factories using dry bolts to assemble engines, but what's the truth for the whiteblock?

Oil or no oil?

Thanks.

Vida specifics oiled for the head bolts.

1. Install new cylinder head gasket
2. Lubricate the screws.
3. Tighten the screws in three stages from the middle and working out according to:
  • 1. 20 Nm
    2. 60 Nm
    3. 130°, use angle gauge 951 2050

Thank you!

I assume I also oil the main and rod bolts as well.
