Thanks but no thanks. Some things seem to work best mechanically, like toilets.
Not when a end users do not know how to operate a toilet. There is a reason they converted to automatic flush. Some end users where leaving the operation of the toilet to the next user because it was too complex for them.

Some end users cannot operate a dipstick or fail to do so periodically but they can read a display in their line of sight.

Unavoidable side effect of dumbing down America. Need to deal with the self-entitled control freaks first. Then we can convert our training centers back into educational centers.

After my B5234T's head gasket blew, I decided to upgrade. I bought a B5254T from a 2004 S60R to use as an intermediate engine while I build the B5234T into a hot-rod plant. The idea is that everything between the head and oil pan will be built 2.3 Turbo and everything on either side will be built S60R.

While I'm reassembling the B5254T so I can actually use it in the car, I'm also building up the short block for the B5234T.

What can I say? The garage is too dirty and dark for proper engine assembly. Besides, the workpieces need to be within a certain temperature range to get accurate measurements with the micrometers and the garage is 90 degrees.

Unfortunately, while I was moving the crank from one counter to the other, gravity decided to "help."

Oh well, I still have three working burners

However, now I can tell people I once dropped a Volvo crank through a stove.

Id pull off the knob for that broken burner, if anything gets in there and contacts the hot surface directly then it could smoke up or burn.

Ouch. Was Mrs Nevada out of town?

So, just to clarify - you had to bring the engine inside where it’s cooler..?

How do you car gurus know all the exacting information required to do this kind of work and have access to all of these interesting parts (old S60R engine) and tools? I'm fighting to overcome nerves to change my timing belt and you are rebuilding multiple Frankenstein engines. I'm amazed.

For real though. I agonize over which coolant to buy. It takes me a whole weekend to do a 1 hour job. I too am amazed.

Man, I got a good laugh out of that! The dangers of engine building in the kitchen...

Google is your friend! Pretty much any mechanical specs you could need are out there somewhere, on some forum. Workshop manuals, VIDA, etc. are extremely useful tools for everything from the most basic repairs to complete rebuilds of various components.
I’m self taught. Lots of reading on car forums since I was probably 14 has me doing just about everything imaginable on these cars.

The current project is swapping the motor in this Kia Forte. The old one has the typical Hyundai rod bearing rattle. I have to say, this is by FAR the easiest vehicle I’ve ever worked on. And also one of the newest. If I started earlier in the day and was feeling 100% (been sick the past week, doing much better now fortunately!) I probably could have had it done tonight.

Speaking of spare S60R engines, I managed to finagle this into the XC90 to ship off to its new owner in Texas. So far, I highly recommend Fastenal for freight shipping! Ridiculously good pricing and super easy process.

I also had the joy of experiencing my first broken accessory bracket. I’ve been lifting these engines by this bracket for years, and this is the first one to snap on me. I’ve heard about it, but never experienced it first hand. Won’t be doing that again!
