PCV Sensor Fix Plus Other Uses

Post by MoVolvos »

Changed the oil a couple of days ago on the C30 and couldn't find the filter socket. In removing the air box to provide more room we discovered the PCV Sensor was off and in the plug (right red arrow). The previous owner had tried to epoxy it and it didn't held. Not sure if it was already off or we bumped it off again during the air box removal. The left arrow shows baking soda which I will explain later.

Still didn't have enough room so we finally tried a small C-Clamp to grip the top to remove the filter cover but that's another story.

If you run into this problem or in need of securing broken plastic in the car here is what I found that works. The amount used depends on the repair at hand.

Tools:

1) 96% Alcohol
2) Sand Paper
3) Baking Soda
4) Super Glue
5) SB188 High Temp Silicone

Having tried all different brands of Super Glue and High Temp Sealant I found these two to be the best.

https://www.amazon.com/High-Temp-Silico ... 78&sr=8-13

Method:

The two videos shows where I got the ideas from about a year or two ago and combined their use. Video one shows the use of baking soda and super glue. Second video shows the damaged air-box which occurred on our GS300 except after removal the entire bottom fell out as seen in the video. Instead of paying around $150 decided to find a good sealant to glue the now separate pieces.

For the PCV sensor I sanded everything with 400 and 600 grit sand paper, cleaned with alcohol and repeat. Have to make sure the surfaces are all clean and dry. Ran a small bead SB188 at the bottom of the sensor as it can't be reached after attaching.

Once set in place sprinkle a small mound of baking soda in the middle of the sensor making sure spans both sides. A dab or two of super glue and the baking soda is rock hard attaching both sides together. Don't use too much as it will enter into the sensor contacts as the Super Glue flows very well.

Wait a minute or two and apply a gob of sealant on top wedging some on the side and allow it to set for an hour before assembly making sure it does not get knocked off again. The Super Glue is to keep it set while the sealant creates a large bond that won't snap.

The SB188 has held out extremely well on the air box!
