Intermittent pulsing scraping noise from front end

Post by brooklynsystems »

Hey Guys,
Greetings from VT. I've got a 2000 V70 FWD (my baby) and I've got a noise that I can't get rid of. The noise is intermittent- normally doesn't start until I hit a pothole or bump in the road, then I hear a light scraping noise that pulses with wheel speed. I'm pretty sure it's coming from front right although it's hard to distinguish and I can't hear it well with the windows down. Sometimes when I'm driving thru an urban area with tight buildings on both sides I can hear it echoing off the buildings and the scraping is amplified. It doesn't seem to change with braking at all, and turning doesn't seem to effect it either. Sometimes with turning it can get a little worse. If I'm going really slow (like in a parking lot) the scraping sound sometimes gets worse. And then it will disappear as quick as it started - again normally when I hit a small bump. It always seems to happen within 5 minutes of driving however. Comes and goes for the duration of a drive. I thought it was brakes, but then replaced everything (except for calipers- they are about 3 years old, and the slide pins are genuine volvo, less than a year old and very clean and greased nicely), thought maybe it was a wheel bearing because the left side went bad a month ago. So replaced the right bearing- no change. Most all of the suspension parts are new and in good shape. I'm wondering now if it could be something with the CV Axle? My car has 286k miles on it and I'm pretty sure the axles are original- do those go bad? I don't see any broken boots or grease leaking anywhere...

I can't get the sound to replicate while on jack stands of course.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First 2 things I would check:

1) The brake dust shield is not touching the rotor.
2) It could be the support bearing on the RHS axle. It sits just behind the RH rear corner of the engine.

Thank you so much Neil! I definitely have checked the brake dust shield. But I didn't know about the support bearing for the axle. I'm guessing that's probably it. I'll have a look this week.

The bearing is not listed as a replaceable part by Volvo for 99- cars. However, the part is listed for -98 cars and is the same part.

I bought bearings from Turkey for a Ford Transit that are the same size. I did write a not about that a few years ago for dimensions required.

It can be hard to remove, but I am told a cold chisel will shatter it allowing removal. I refitted with a length of steel fence pole with a cap on it. It was a perfect diameter. I had my local dealer remove the bearing for me as they still had a tool for it.

Thanks again Neil! You were right on the money. Axle support bearing. I didn't wind up replacing the bearing - I ordered a remanufactured A1 Cardone axle and put it on. It might not have been the cheapest way to go, but having never worked with the axles before it was a good learning experience. And with a 21 year old rusty axle I'm amazed it's lasted this long without tearing a boot or anything. Glad to have this figured out.
