My son is out on the road, borrowing my '04 XC. A warning triangle popped up and the message window says "Engine system service required." He has the owners manual and it doesn't appear to be a "shut the car down" emergency. Just "visit your dealer as soon as possible" per the manual.
They were on the highway, pulled in to a town, shut it off for a bit. Came back out and that warning came on when they restarted. Oil is fine, temp is fine, no stumbling or missing, seems to be running fine he says.
Helpless dad far away.

1. Turn ignition to position I
2. Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
3. Turn the key to position II within 2 seconds, while continuing to press trip odometer reset button.
4. For all vehicles from the 2003 model year a general yellow lamp will light when the reset button must be released.
5. Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 4 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded
NOTE: If the reset button for the trip odometer is not released within 4 seconds, the service reminder indicator (SRI) is not reset.
6. If the trip meter is already reset the reset button should be held in for a minimum of 10 seconds and a maximum of 14 seconds.

OK, thanks - this is a variation of what I just found here...

They had filled the tank and reset the ODO, but that was 100 miles ago. That shouldn't affect #6, right?

Nope, you should be fine following the instructions for resetting the maintenance reminder. Just remind yourself to do the maintenance when sonny boy returns.

oh....I see this has been asked before many times......sorry!
So I'll ask him the mileage. Did it hit a service interval maybe?

On my 07 XC70 (should be the same as your 04) the service interval reminder popped up yesterday. It's a different, milder message: "Time for regular service."

Yeah, I get a little reminder in the message window. He said this was a yellow light warning sort of message. He was going to re-set, and they'll be home tonight or tomorrow.
Thanks.
Thanks.

The "Time for regular service" message also illuminates the yellow warning light. Anyway just adding minutiae - sounds like it is sorted.

It doesn't sound like the maintenance reminder. It is more likely to be something emissions related. Have your son go to an autoparts store and see if they can read and stored CEL messages via the OBD2 port.
It may not be urgent but its worth finding out why the car thinks engine service is needed.
