Any warnings on 2002 S60 purchase?

Post by chuckcintron »

Hi newer car owners :-) I normally hang out in the 850 side of this website...never posted anywhere else.

My boss asked my advice (sigh...) on a potential purchase to replace the 99 Acura his kid rolled a couple of weeks ago. He was impressed with the fact that his kid walked away scratch-free, and is looking for a similarly "safe" car as a replacement. He found a couple of used S60s he was asking me about.

So, I know very well to never recommend a used 850 to anyone other than a gearhead shadetree mechanic like myself (AC evap, PNP switch, PCV system, oil leaks, air pump, etc.)

I have to be very careful here, as my credibility is at stake. Are there any well known defects with the 2002 model S60 that I should be aware of?

Thanks,
Chuck

The only problem I have heard of was the electronic throttle on which Volvo has now extended the warranty to 200K miles. Friend Volvo mechanic has an 01 V 70 with 123K miles and loves it, only problem was the electronic throttle which Volvo took care of. He runs regular fuel and that is on a T5.

No warranty (and usually no issues) on 2002's. The warranty is for 99 -01 with a SELECT few 2002, non turbos.
My 02 was fine but remind him these are not Japanese cars and WILL need to be maintained which will cost a bit more than he was used to paying in an Acura
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, they are very particular about having all the service on their cars done by the dealer so they will maintain anything they buy. This 2002 S60 is a non-turbo. I think they are going to find that it's a little more sluggish than the '99 Acura TL (which was 225HP, and might be part of the reason why his kid flipped it).

I own an '03 S60T. My non-dealer Volvo guy says the S60 is the finest car Volvo has ever made and would not nickle and dime us like our S70 did. He has a low opinion of early S80s.
