Red 98 v70 base: won't keep running: VIDEO

Post by CIK7 »

Red 98 v70 5 speed base model, as base as you can get with a sunroof, with black cloth door cards. This one was great until I parked it to change the starter. Took a week or two to make it to the jy to buy a starter bracket to replace the one I accidentally sent back with the starter that was 2mm too long. Please watch the video to understand my issue. The revving toward the end is me revving to keep it from dying. No gas pedal means it dies. I know the throttle body gasket has a couple empty spots that I created. Can that cause it to die? New one already on the way. What else could cause this issue?

Fix your vac leak at the throttle body gasket and report back. Also make sure you didn't knock anything else loose while doing the starter replacement.

Yes, on that throttle body gap question

Air sneaking in after the mAF isn’t metered , so the engine and ECu doesn’t know it’s there, so doesn’t send enough fuel.

Too little fuel, lean mixture, stall.

Putting your foot down pulls more air through the throttle body putting the mixture closer to ideal

Definitely fuel issue. Have you changed the fuel filter? Unless it was dealer serviced it is likely original and rusty. These guys know their stuff, but during both steps on the accelerator the engine knocked. Even with a substantial vacuum leak the injection should have instantly gone rich upon opening of the throttle as the fuel trim would be rich. The engine never sounded to me to be anything but too lean.

Check the fuel pressure as I believe the 98 has a pressure regulator at the rail 5hat could be faulty, if it has a MAP sensor check the vacuum line to it as it also can be brittle. You could find water in the tank. The filter will be full of water. I'll be curious what fixes it! June

Sounds like how mine sounded with a major vac leak at the intake manifold. When i had it open, mine would start up and instantly die as yours did. Gassing it seemed to help if i recall correctly.

Also as the others said, fix the gap at the throttle body and it should help.

HEY HEY HEY! Lol. So I got the new throttle body gasket on. Unfortunately that wasn't the issue. The issue was a *FACE SLAP*. You mentioned intake manifold. I checked the IM gasket and oh my I left 3 screws loose. Tightened those and voila my car runs just as good as it didn't before parking it. What a face slap!
