Timing Belt replacement

Post by Mr. Detail »

Just need to verify when you guys replace the timing belt on your P2's.
My V70 last had it replaced on Jan. 2013 with 107k miles.
I now have 169k miles on her. Am I still OK?

I think the interval is 105,000k for regular conditions, that number will be in your owners manual in the glove box. I just did mine yesterday and it had 95000 miles and no cracks or noticeable wear. Generally recommended to do the idler, tensioner and water pump on the second timing belt change. Mine had the originals in there with 286,000 kms and they appeared to still be serviceable. I changed them all with Volvo OEM to be sure.

if in doubt, change the belt. Ive also changed belts after major seal oil leaks, probably over careful but i dont want to risk it. Also stick with the Volvo branded kit, the pulley and idler is made by Ina so you can save money buying from them but no one knows who makes the belt.

Belt is most likely made by Gates.

INA aftermarket is a holy crap for the past 3-5 years. Crappy bearings, crappy casting... I sure hope Volvo puts something better in its blue boxes, like INA made in where it has been made a decade ago.

Sorry but can someone fill me in on the letters for "INA" and what they stand for?

I have a 2004 V70 (FWD) 2.5T. My Owner's Manual says the timing belt interval is 120K miles for the 2.5T engine on AWD cars. Why would AWD vs. FWD make any difference? The 'regular' engine (non-turbo) interval is 105K miles.

There are also comments that certain engines (with engine VIN codes 39 & 64) have a 150K interval.
And another note that Engine VIN code 59 has a 120K interval.
(see link to Maint sched at end of post}

My engine code sticker has 3 numbers:
  • 6900631
    3386469
    B5254T2
I am not sure which of these specifies the Engine VIN Code.

Can anyone help clarify this?

Thanks!

Bob

Thanks, xHeart. I was looking at the various engine #'s on the timing cover sticker & block rather than digits 6 & 7 of the VIN. Those digits for my car are 59. Thanks for setting me straight! According to the maint. schedule my interval should be 120K miles. But there is a lot of controversy about 105K vs. 120K despite what the manual and schedule say. At a minimum I have 25K miles to make a decision as to what to do. Thanks again!

In other regions the same belt/tensioner/everything is due at 75k miles only or after 5 years :) Go figure.
