850 Lost a tool

Post by manovlov »

Of course, if everything was simple, we would probably live on other planet... Yes, i know it's obscure as an introduction, and so far from the title.

I wanted to control the thermostat. I used a a hexagonal bit and a socket wrench to open the pipe. But the hexagonal bit went over the pipe and felt down behind...so : this

I've tried to catch the tool with a magnetic tool but no way. I don't know if the tool is around the belt, behind the alternator, A/C compressor bracket. I will have to do my PCV soon, i hope i will have more space to see where's that f*cking tool. Otherwise, i will have to unscrew the bracket itself.

Any idea about how saving all that work ?

I lost a 10mm socket in that same area and never found it! Probably the socket got crushed with the car as the next owner wrote it off on black ice! The part can fall in so many areas like the gap between the block and the alternator and get stuck on the ledge there or behind the PCV collection tank. Even behind the plastic cover for the timing belt. Based on the prices of tools these days, unless it is a really expensive tool or you have sentimental attachment to it, forget it and move on and buy another. Time/stress v's replacing is not worth it. Sure it may turn up when you do the PCV and have better access, but then again it might go where the 2nd socks go when they go in the wash/dryer!!
