Volvo V70 Stalling when slowing down - intermittent

Post by gscottnelson »

I have a 2004 v70 with 55000 miles on it. My wife has complained that the car has been stalling when coming to a slowdown in traffic and she ends up getting stuck at an intersection.

I had the throttle body cleaned for $150 and still doing it. I tried to replicate the problem, and I got it to happen once in trying for about 40 miles of driving.

It seems that when the car slows down the RPMs drop when the car reaches about @20 mph, and then stalls right before I come to a complete stop.

It seems this is a recurring problem. Here are my guesses based on looking at different forums:
Fuel Pump
Elbow Vacuum leak
Fuel Relay board failure

Any other thoughts? Dealer (Volvo of Richardson, Texas) has driven 180 miles, but not replicated the problem.

My wife is getting scared to drive the car...

Please Help!!!
Thanks
Scott

Scott, allow me to welcome you to MVS

I'm not a mechanic, just a guy trying to learn more about how to fix his car :)

Anyway, have you tried swapping out the fuel filter?

And, I've heard of people with 700 series Volvos being able to rule out the fuel pump by giving it a good tap with a rock and seeing if the symptoms remain.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help

Darrell

Did you change spark plugs yet? I would at least take them out and look at them. Also agree with your first assessment- any of those parts could cause what you're experiencing.

Have not changed the plugs yet -

Wondering what order, or what the best way of going about fixing the above listed items - dealer or foreign repair place....

Spark plugs should be changed at 30K according to the maintenance schedule for a V70 '01 (strange that mine says 60K for an '04 which is way to long). I would change with genuine Volvo plugs or Bosch Copper's (not Platinum)..that's the order I would do things in...plugs first and see how she goes. Spark plug gap is 0.03 on our V70 but read your manual, it will tell you depending on what model you have. If after the plugs things still are not right, then I would check out the fuel pump relay next. Hope this helps. Btw, the Bosch Copper Core FR7DCX are cheap!
