New to me 240

Post by 850 LPT »

Hello,
Up until this point I have been only lurking in this forum, but I finally bought my first 240. So here is a little introduction if you will.
The car is a 92' 240GL which spent most of it's life in California before it moved to Florida for a few years and then to MA to a collectors home. That collector who presumably never drove it in the winter then sold it to my PO. It has around 190k on it but you wouldn't know.

As you would expect, the thing is pretty much rust free, which was a major point for me in buying it. Paint is a little tired but should polish up very nicely.

There are a couple of things that need attention:

The CEL is on. PO told me it's related to the EGR, we shall see.
Instrument cluster lighting is totally dead, along with all the switches (very suspicious)
Odo and temp gauge are working only when they feel like.
Looks like the tranny hasn't been serviced in a while

It drives very nice and feel very solid, no rattles of any kind.
I could just open and close the driver door all day long, that clunk is just so satisfying :D

First thing I did was replace the headlights which were very foggy. When I picked it up with abscate (thanks again my friend) I had to drive it home in the dark, in the rain and with wipers that were shot. I decided to use the high beams at all times to keep me safe and nobody flashed me :o .

Welcome to 240 world. This one looks like my 1987 240 from about 50 feet. I drove 240s for about 20 years. Odometer problem is likely a broken gear in the dash. Does the speedometer work? Dash lights all replace from the back side of dash. Dash remove out the front easily. Transmissions are very robust. Save the old headlights - they will become obsolete but can be polished out.

Thanks!

And oops. Old headlights are already gone  But they were really really bad.

So yes speedometer works, but odometer only works intermittently. Will order a new gear soon along with dash bulbs. None of the switch bulbs work and neither does the gear selector bulb. I have to research the correct bulbs for those.

Thank you Matt.

It certainly presents well, but it is not perfect. The paint is very dirty and needs a good polish. Also there is a decent dent on top of the rear passenger door. Maybe one of those painless repair places can take care of that. Then the black trim on top of the doors is cracked and faded. But Dave Barton has inexpensive replacements for them. I am also contemplating painting the lower body trim which is faded.

So it's a bunch of little stuff that's going to be fun to address. It's exactly the kind of car I was looking for with no major issues :D

These 240s have many Bosch electric relays. They can get flaky when the solder joints open. A preventive maintenance is to open them and reflow the solder connections. Some are under the dash and some are under the carpet.
If the overdrive rear bushing is leaking it is pretty easy to replace the bushing and seal.
There were many Haynes Repair manuals published for these cars. Get one for good reference. I may have an extra. There is also a great manual from Bentley that has more details.

Thank you Mr. Lugnut,
This is all great information. Sounds like the relay repair is something for a winter project when there is not much else to do. I will keep that in mind.

I already received my copy of the Haynes manual. Looks like it's decent enough to get an idea about the basics. But I think I am learning more through online resources such as Matthews and Dave Barton. He has a wealth of information on his site as well.

There is also an great 240 resource group at brickboard.com
They are more about the older Volvos than newer models covered well by MVS.
